Raw Diamonds The REAL diamond in the Rough.
This month we are profiling Todd Reed, the innovative jeweler who designs stunning jewelry with raw diamonds and rose cut diamonds.
Rough diamonds are a mineral that is a crystalline of carbon. They form between 90-120 miles under the earth's surface. Raw diamonds range in color from medium grey to grayish white, and can even be from green to brown.
"The rough diamond is so unique that it becomes the design", comments Todd Reed. "It builds a palette of color not otherwise known and the geometric shapes cannot be duplicated. I find pleasure in the color and the texture."
Todd uses more than 10,000 cts of rough diamonds a year, using only perfect crystal shapes. The diamonds are conflict free, and are purchased through reputable dealers or private collections. Todd truly does achieve raw elegance in his use of these unique and inherently beautiful stones. |

Furry Friends Duncan & Miss Lilly
Long time customers Bill and Lee Anne visited last week with Duncan. He was remarkably patient while they shopped.
Our next door neighbor, Sandy, from Chinaberrys, took her new puppy, Miss Lilly, for a romp in our bushes. Isn't she cute?

Todd Reed Raw Diamonds, Raw Elegance
"My work using raw diamond cubes and other natural diamond shapes... it started as a way to question society about the idea of perceived value. In particular how value and perceived value relate to ideas of beauty or perfection that have become norms of society.
There are certain ad campaigns, such as, "She'll like you at a half carat, but she'll love you at a carat.", that prompted me to make this line of jewelry. This would be a line of jewelry that really did use the most perfect diamond in the world, the actual raw diamond. Uncut. Unpolished. Natural, perfect geometry. That was around 1994 when this idea really started to take off.
I am a self-taught goldsmith and metalsmith, and very much enjoy the hard work that goes into each piece. I have been extremely fortunate in that my work has won many international awards, and is frequently included in books, trade publications, and consumer magazines. My work can be seen at the finest shows and exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world. My work continues to grow as I grow, and I am still inspired by most everything. Beauty and nature are endless inspiration."
While boasting many achievements over the last 15 years, Todd Reed is best known for successfully bringing artistic appeal to the field of fine jewelry through his innovative use of raw diamonds. Recently, he has begun combining raw diamonds with natural color rose cut diamonds for a spectacular effect. Todd has become a mainstay in cutting-edge design with a reputation for obtaining the most unique diamond specimens in the world and setting them in an award winning signature style.

Karen A. Baggott Morning Light Photography
Karen began making photographs of nature when she moved from the suburbs of Detroit to rural Maine in 1971. Her first camera was a rangefinder camera - a gift from her mother, Julie. Though her first efforts were 'just for fun' she was encouraged over the years by artistic friends and various teachers to continue her exploration of photography.
Karen's education began with sharing a darkroom and studio with another photographer. She went on to take nature photography workshops in Highlands, NC and Munising, Michigan. She also participated in the Photography Technology Program at Carteret Community College. She's been printing in the darkroom since 1976, and switched over to digital manipulation and printing in 1999.
Karen has traveled extensively, photographing nature and people in New Zealand, South Korea and Tahiti. Her focus has always been nature, but she has a somewhat abstract take on her subject. She enjoys focusing on rust, peeling paint, and the leafy reflections on water.
Karen is the recipient of awards in Carteret, Beaufort, Wayne, Wake and Onslow counties. She has been active in the Carteret County Arts and Crafts Coalition since 1988 and has served as Executive Director of the Arts Council of Carteret County. Currently she teaches classes in digital camera photography in Carteret and neighboring counties. She and her husband, Jerry Heiser (whom we profiled in our March 2007 newsletter) reside with their cat, Calvin, in the Camp Glenn area of Morehead City .
