What is it? Materials...what is gold filled?
With the price of gold over $900.00 per ounce now, people are looking to alternatives. One of the best options is gold filled jewelry.
But what is it? The term is a bit confusing. Gold filled consists of a layer of base metal, such as brass, sandwiched between two thick layers of 14k gold (1/20th by weight). The bond is a very strong one, making gold filled very durable. It won't rub off, chip, or tarnish. Most people who can wear 14k gold can also wear gold filled, as the outer layer is 14k gold.
Many people confuse gold filled with gold electroplate. Gold electroplate is a very thin layer and has a fragile bond, so it is not nearly as durable as gold filled.
Gold filled is a great option for the gold lover. It is beautiful, durable, easy to care for and very affordable.

Furry Friends
We have lots of furry visitors here at Handscapes...from Miss Kitty, who spends a lot of time on our back porch (who wouldn't?) to Scooterbug, the cat who wishes he could nap in our jewelry cases.
Here is a photo of Robin and Richard Brice (Robin makes our fabulous fire breathing pottery dragons) with their new "rescue puppy", Boo.

Mike & Lori Constantino, two of our dear friends and customers, just adopted this beautiful lab/border collie puppy. Her name is Baci. They sent this photo.... but we can't wait to meet her.

"My Grandfather once told me that there are two kinds of people: Those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; There was much less competition there."

Michael Michaud Beauty from Nature (see more at Michael Michaud)
Michael Michaud is a wonderful jeweler who is a real favorite of many of our customers. We just got in some great new designs, so we thought this would be a good time to tell you a bit about him.
Artist Michael Michaud was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in Westport, Connecticut. He currently resides in Fairfield, CT with his wife and children. Michael studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology's prestigious school for American craftsmen, graduating in 1980. In 1991, fortunate enough to be living in the Connecticut countryside and working near New York City's flower district, Michael's love of nature began to combine with his love of jewelry.
Today's collection is a combination of Michael's exceptional knowledge of jewelry making and his love of nature. He has perfected the technique of creating models from natural elements and, after models are made, manipulating these "copies of nature" into beautiful jewelry. Using bronze, sterling silver or gold, and natural stones and pearls, Michael's designs have become well known for their remarkable craftsmanship and beauty.

Of course, being on the seacoast we are very fond of his Sea Life series. We also love his botanical pieces, as shown below in the bamboo and azalea. We carry an extensive selection of Michael's jewelry as well as his beautiful table art.

Meet local artist Jerry Heiser Sculptor Extraordinaire (see more at Jerry Heiser)
Jerry Heiser, of Morehead City, North Carolina, creates some of the most imaginative sculptures we have ever seen. The "Trojan Armoured-Dillo" pictured here is just one example of his extraordinary work. Yes, indeed, it is a lamp, incorporating a fringed armadillo in the Victorian tradition with Jerry's amazingly engineered mechanical additions.

Upon graduating from Miami University (Ohio) in 1968 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, Jerry enlisted in the US Army, where he did a tour of duty in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam (69-70) with the 4th Infantry Division. Upon his Honorable Discharge he took advantage of the GI Bill and received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from George Washington University, majoring in sculpture and three dimensional design. While working on his degree at night, he worked full-time during the day as a medical/scientific illustrator for the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute in Bethesda, MD.

In 1978, he moved to Bath, Maine to study traditional wooden boatbuilding at The Apprenticeshop. It is here that he met his wife, Karen Baggott. Together they moved to East Hampton, Long Island, where Jerry was employed as the Exhibit Designer for the Amagansett Maritime Museum. A career move in 1985 led them to Morehead City where he was employed as the Head of the Exhibit/Design Department at the NC Maritime Museum.
His work has been recognized twice by the Southeastern Museums Council (SEMC) Award for Excellence in Exhibit Design and three times by the Arts Council of Carteret County (Best in Show for his sculptures). His work has been exhibited at the San Diego Maritime Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and other galleries. Upon his retirement from the NCMM in 2005, he was given the William Alderson Lifetime Achievement Award for his leadership and contributions to museums and the Museum profession. Jerry now spends his free time doing custom woodworking and sculpture. He and his wife Karen (who is an exceptional photographer) reside in Morehead City.
