Random Elements: Featuring ARTsmart Student May 6 - 15 Blue Star Contemporary Art Center 116 Blue Star
Blue Star Contemporary Art Center's ARTsmart education program presents Random Elements, a collection of new work from the ARTsmart MOSAIC students. The show includes paintings, drawings, mosaics, photographs and mixed media work created by the students after school at the Blue Star studio. An artist talk by ARTsmart educator Alex Rubio and several of his students will open the exhibition Thursday, May 6 at 7 pm. FREE www.bluestarart.org

Cinco de Mayo Celebration of the Arts is presented by the Hispanic American Cultural Association. Music Under the Stars is a free outdoor pops concert for the whole family. The USAA Concert Band and Jazz Band perform stirring marches, jazz, Latino, Big Band, patriotic and musical highlights from every decade. Part heartfelt drama and part love letter to a uniquely American neighborhood, La Mission tells many stories: that of a man who fights to reconcile the life he thought he had with the one he has; that of a violent but respected father's turbulent relationship with his gay teenage son; and that of a community with conflicting values struggling to hold onto its history and culture. A low rider procession is planned for the opening at 6 pm, the film begins at 7:45 pm and will be opened by Jesse Borrego and other cast members. In honor of Dance Month in San Antonio, the May Artist of the Month is The City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Dance Program, and its founder, Berta Almaguer.
This year, the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation department
celebrates 75 years of dance, and honors dance program founder Berta
Almaguer. The Parks and Recreation Department proudly boasts the
longest running municipal dance program in the country.
