Autograph Series public reading and Q&A February 18, 7pm Trinity University 715 Stadium Drive
Local writers David Liss and Andrew Porter are the featured writers for Gemini Ink's spring semester Autograph Series. David Liss is the author of five novels. His debut novel, A Conspiracy of Paper, was named a New York Times Notable Book and won him the 2001 Barry, MacAvity and Edgar awards for Best First Novel. The Asian Festival brings together organizations rich in Eastern culture, showcasing their respective cultures with an educational and entertaining approach. The event includes performances, martial arts and cooking demonstrations, botanicals and cuisine from more than a dozen Far Eastern countries - such as Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Pakistani, Filipino, and Polynesian. From reclaimed former neighborhood grocery stores to intimate backyard sanctuaries, the studios on the tour provide the environments in which artists create a variety of works, such as large-scale ceramic sculptures, metalwork, one-of-a-kind light fixtures, art photography, beadwork and embroidery, and painting in a variety of styles. Music on the Move: Asia February 22, 6 pm and 8 pm San Antonio Museum of Art 200 West Jones Avenue
This series will take audiences through the Japanese, Chinese and Korean Art Collections performing music from those countries. Featuring works for the Japanese shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and compositions by contemporary composers for string ensemble including Voyage and Forest Whispers by Marty Regan, assistant professor of music at Texas A&M University. February Artist of the Month
|
The February Artist of the Month is Bernice Appelin-Williams.
Appelin-Williams, a mixed-media artist, educator and urban planner, began her career in the 1980s by producing collages, installations and assemblages that often reflected political, spiritual and social issues.
