She Stoops to Conquer October 15 - November 1 Jump-Start Performance Co. 108 Blue Star
She Stoops to Conquer paints a picture of an admirable society, but one that is deeply in need of revision that comes through the agency of a wonderful young woman, Kate Hardcastle. Kate is a character in the tradition of great comedies like Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew and Lysistrata that offer up the wisdom and wiles of women as the means of curing problems both great and small. When the male world is caught up in the ridiculous conventions men themselves have imposed, it takes a woman like Kate to sort it all out. www.classictheatre.org

Witte Game Dinner: Wild, Wild Witte October 19 Witte Museum 3801 Broadway
The tradition of the Witte Game Dinner began 39 years ago when area sportsmen and hunters were asked to clean out their lockers and donate game to the Witte for a barbeque and party on the museum grounds. This event was one of the first in San Antonio to include a charity auction. The Game Dinner has grown significantly from the barbeque in the Witte backyard to a major fundraiser attended by more than 1,200 of San Antonio's leading citizens. www.wittemuseum.org

SAN ANTONIO
America's Favorite Cities Travel + Leisure October 2009 This summer, readers ranked 30 U.S. cities on their culture, shopping, restaurants, nightlife, and more. See how San Antonio stacked up to other cities.
TEXAS
Winspear Opera House: Sleek venue welcomes patrons with sonic, visual intimacy The Dallas Morning News (10/11/09) Scott Cantrell "The Winspear is a huge presence, spreading a finned sunscreen far beyond its functional footprint. The ruby-red inner drum, rising through the lobby and projecting above, is the Arts District's sole splash of color - and one of far too few anywhere near downtown."
NATIONAL
Luring Artists to Lend Life to Empty Storefronts New York Times (10/12/09) Diane Cardwell "As the recession drags on and storefronts across New York remain empty, commercial landlords are turning to an unlikely new class of tenants: artists, who in flusher times tend to get pushed out rather than lured in."
INTERNATIONAL
Afghan director: Insurgency threatens movie scene AP (10/14/09) Min Lee "A Golden Globe-winning Afghan director who made the country's first post-Taliban movie says he's worried the group's resurgence may threaten artistic freedom again."
