Kahlo: Lens of MurayFrida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray
July 29, 2009 - December 6, 2009
Museo Alameda

During his long career, Nickolas Muray photographed many important people from the political, artistic and social arenas. His work was regularly featured in Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, McCall's and the Ladies Home Journal. Approximately fifty photographic portraits taken of Frida Kahlo comprise the exhibition Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray. The photographs, dating from 1937 to 1941, explore Muray's unique perspective; in the 1930s and 1040s he was Frida Kahlo's friend, lover and confidant. Muray's photographs bring to light Kahlo's deep interest in her Mexican heritage, her life and the people significant to her.

The Van Cliburn Foundation said Wednesday that it had hired Janice Mayer as its new director of artistic planning and communication, filling two recently vacated positions. Mayer, 51, who assumes her new position Sept. 1, will lead the artist management and public relations-marketing divisions of the Cliburn. Both jobs had been open since the midsummer departures of longtime general manager Maria Guralnik and Sevan Melikyan, director of marketing and public relations.

The Seattle Times (8/25/09)
Susan Gilmore
"In what was advertised as a gift to the citizens of Seattle, a gold-colored sculpture by an unknown artist turned up in Gas Works Park overnight Monday. The papier-mâché guerrilla art sculpture consists of several pieces: a full-size gold-colored man standing on the waterfront surrounded by what appear to be shells, some with the heads of people emerging from them."

In Beijing, The Middle-Aged Step To The Barre
The Irish Times (8/26/09)
Rosie Spencer "Ballet is generally the domain of young girls in Ireland, but in China it is becoming a pastime of choice for the middle-aged. ... Ballet has a strong focus on the individual, which does not sit easily with the mass focus of Maoist doctrine. It is also a western art form," making the popularity of ballet classes "emblematic of China's modernisation in the last 30 years of reform."
