Weep No More: Music of Peace & Hope May 24, 3 pm St. Mark's Episcopal Church 315 East Pecan Street Voci di Sorelle presents Weep No More, Music of Peace & Hope, an uplifting Memorial Day concert honoring the service and sacrifice of the men and women in uniform, and their families. SOLI Gone Mad! May 27 McNay Art Museum 6000 N. New Braunfels SOLI Chamber Ensemble presents the final program of their 2008-09 concert series. The centerpiece of the program will be Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' iconic theatrical work Eight Songs for a Mad King, which explores the dramatic downward spiral into the madness of King George III of England. SOLI will be joined by guest artists flutist Allison Garza, percussionist Thomas Burritt, conductor and co-stage director Brett Mitchell, stage director Buck Ross, and Timothy Jones as Mad King George. San Antonio Symphony Neighborhood Concerts May 27, 7 pm Clark High School 5150 De Zavala Road The San Antonio Symphony presents a series of free neighborhood recitals featuring musicians from the San Antonio Symphony and area high schools. The May 27 performance features Bach Double Violin Concerto, John Williams Air & Simple Gifts and Cimarosa Concerto for Oboe and Strings. The May 28 performance is held at St. Matthew's Methodist Church (2738 E. Waterflow Through August 23 San Antonio Museum of Art 200 W. Jones Avenue Waterflow is an exhibition of recent works by fifteen Texas artists who have been inspired by water. These artists work in several mediums and take a variety of approaches, with themes centering on the essence of nature, the passage of time, nature as metaphor, and the preservation of the environment. David S. Rubin will moderate a panel discussion entitled "Water Flows in All Directions" with artists from the exhibition, Justin Boyd, Ansen Seale, Liz Ward and Liliana Wilson, on Tuesday, June 9 at 6:30 pm. www.samuseum.org |

Mayor Phil Hardberger's official portrait was unveiled at City Council Chambers Wednesday May 20.The portrait was painted by artist Angel Rodriguez-Diaz. Mayor and Mrs. Linda Hardberger said they chose Rodriguez-Diaz because he's a local artist and has a unique style. The portrait features Mayor Hardberger standing in Main Plaza, with San Fernando Cathedral and a portion of City Hall in the background. The portrait, titled "A Man for All Seasons," will hang in the first floor gallery of Municipal Plaza. Tactical Philanthropy and Arts Financing: The Chronicle of Philanthropy and the Nonprofit Finance Fund are offering a series of free, live online discussions that will give nonprofit and foundation leaders the opportunity to get advice from financial experts. Tuesday, May 26, at 11 am: Join in on an online discussion with the wealth adviser Sean Stannard-Stockton on how changes in technology, demographics, and ideals are challenging traditional nonprofit structures in profound ways. Thursday, May 28: Financial Management in Tough Times, the second in a series of four recession-related discussions that will look at new models of financing for arts organizations. The May artist of the month is Stuart Allen
Stuart Allen is a visual artist whose work deals with fundamental elements of perception such as light, time, gravity and space. His photographs, sculpture and installation have been shown throughout the U.S. and abroad and his work is found in many private and public collections. You can watch Allen talk about his work as part of the River Improvement Project on the May edition of SA Arts Beat, OCA's monthly tv show.
