Dance Kaleidoscope April 25, 7:30 pm Carver Community Cultural Center 226 N. Hackberry Musical Offerings and San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet, both celebrating their 25th Anniversary Seasons, collaborate for an official Fiesta Event. Works performed by Musical Offerings include Prelude and Night Flight from Swing Shift by Kenji Bunch and Molto Allegro agitato from Trio #I in D minor by Felix Mendelssohn. TopDog/UnderDog Through May 9 San Pedro Playhouse 800 West Ashby Place Suzan-Lori Park's Pulitzer Prize winning play tells the story of two brothers, Lincoln and Booth, who, abandoned by both parents, have had to depend upon each other for survival since they were teenagers. Now in their thirties, the brothers struggle to make a new life, one that will lead them out of poverty. Los Pasos de Cuevas Through June 21 Instituto Cultural de México 600 Hemisfair Park Jose Luis Cuevas, a sketcher, engraver, sculptor and writer, was born in Mexico City in 1934. Cuevas has exhibited around the world and has won numerous awards. He studied at the "La Esmeralda" one of the most important schools of art in Mexico. He is an artist who belonged to the "Rupture Generation," a group of artists who in the 50's incorporated cosmopolitan, abstract and non-political values in the art work with the intention of expanding their style. www.saculturamexico.org |
2009 Annual Fiesta Exhibit Through September 7 Witte Museum 3801 Broadway Crowns and scepters have been associated with Fiesta San Antonio almost from the first Battle of Flowers parade in 1891. The highlight of the exhibit is the cream silk dress and blue velvet train worn by Helena Guenther, Queen of the Court of Carnival of Flowers in 1911, the oldest royal robes in the Witte Museum Collection. A cerise velvet jacket with a beaded peacock on the back that was worn to a Fiesta costume party in 1924 as well as examples of robes and accessories from the early decades of Fiesta are part of this annual exhibit. www.wittemuseum.org |

Get to know San Antonio artists! The April artist of the month is writer, poet, performer, and educator, Dr. Carmen Tafolla. Dr. Carmen Tafollas' work has appeared in more than two hundred anthologies, magazines, journals, readers, American Literature textbooks, Big Books, and in the Poetry-in-Motion series installed on city buses. The co-author of the first book ever published on Latina Civil Rights leader Emma Tenayuca (That's Not Fair! Emma Tenayuca's Struggle for Justice, which Críticas Magazine listed among the Best Children's Books of 2008), she is the recipient of many awards, including the Art of Peace Award in 1999 for writing which contributes to peace, justice, and human understanding.
