Three of SAY Sí's high school students have received prestigious national and regional awards for their outstanding artwork through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the 86 year-old national program that recognizes outstanding creative teenagers and offers scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors. Get to know San Antonio artists! The April artist of the month is writer, poet, performer, and educator, Dr. Carmen Tafolla. Dr. Carmen Tafollas' work has appeared in more than two hundred anthologies, magazines, journals, readers, American Literature textbooks, Big Books, and in the Poetry-in-Motion series installed on city buses. The co-author of the first book ever published on Latina Civil Rights leader Emma Tenayuca (That's Not Fair! Emma Tenayuca's Struggle for Justice, which Críticas Magazine listed among the Best Children's Books of 2008), she is the recipient of many awards, including the Art of Peace Award in 1999 for writing which contributes to peace, justice, and human understanding.
