Lila Downs March 27, 6 pm Sunken Gardens Theater 3875 N. St. Marys Street Lila Downs, Grammy-nominated cantante internacional, is known for blending her indigenous Mexican musical roots with soulful U.S. rhythms. In her new album and tour, Lila and her band add the sounds of Louisiana and Texas into songs that honor the spirit and struggles of women, immigrants, and working people across the Americas. San Antonio is Lila's only Texas stop on her national tour. Double Concerto March 27 & 28 Majestic Theatre 208 E. Houston Street Violinist Sarah Chang comes to the Majestic Theatre with conductor Andrew Grams to perform a concert of Gypsy-flavored favorites. Hungarian composer Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, his final work for orchestra alone, is a musical tour-de-force that showcases every instrument on stage. Chang plays Brahms' uplifting Violin Concerto - a luminous masterpiece that explores the many extremes of human emotion. www.sasymphony.org |
A Place to Stand March 27 - April 5 St. Philip's College 1801 Martin Luther King Drive "A Place to Stand" is the compelling story of an African-American family struggling to survive in the contemporary American urban landscape. It is a story told with original music by Jake Owen and dances are choreographed by Georgina Morgan. Following the opening night performance, John Martin, a member of the Staff for Student Life at St. Philips College and Jamaica Bates Neal, a former student now at St. Mary's University majoring in communications will moderate a 'talkback' with the audience, exploring some of the issues raised by the play. 210.486.2704 |
Dignowity Hill Pushcart Derby March 28, 5 pm Dignowity Hill Park 700 Nolan At this annual event, San Antonio artists and local organizations enter their uniquely-designed pushcarts in Cruz Ortiz' public art project. Teams will test the laws of science at the fifth annual Dignowity Hill Pushcart Derby. The 2009 medal was inspired by artist Angel Rodriguez-Diaz's 2008 public art project, The Beacon. The medal's design motif is a direct replica of the oxidized steel 28-foot-tall illuminated sculpture that sits at the roundabout at Blanco Road and Fulton Street in the Beacon Hill Neighborhood. This is the fifth in a series of limited edition Fiesta medals created by City to feature public art projects from across San Antonio. The medal is available at the City's Visitor Information Center located downtown at 317 Alamo Plaza and the Fiesta Store located at 2611 Broadway. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the medals support the maintenance of public art in San Antonio through the City's Public Art & Design Enhancement Program. Get to know San Antonio artists! The March artist of the month is actor/director Mellissa Marlowe. Mellissa Marlowe is a performer and director for the theatre, who specializes in bringing new works to the stage and adapting classics for modern audiences. She has performed in over forty productions in the San Antonio area, and has directed more than twenty plays.
