AlamedaPhantom Sightings:
Art after the Chicano Movement

March 13 - June 14
Museo Alameda
101 South Santa Rosa

Unlike most exhibitions of Chicano art that have preceded it, "Phantom Sightings" moves away from efforts to define a distinct identity or style and instead focuses attention on conceptual strategies that artists use to intervene in public spaces or debates. The exhibition seeks to add a new dimension to understanding of Chicano art history and notions of ethnic identity, cultural politics, and artistic practice. www.thealameda.org
SAMARy Cooder/Vincent Valdez: El Chavez Ravine
March 14 - August 2
San Antonio Museum of Art
200 W. Jones

Ry Cooder hired San Antonio artist Vincent Valdez to paint a mural on a vintage 1953 Chevy ice cream truck, the subject of which would be the late 1950s displacement of the Los Angeles Chicano community by the developers who built Dodger Stadium. For his research, Valdez used old maps of early Los Angeles and various texts and testimonies from the Los Angeles Housing Authority. He also used Cooder's album as a format for the layout and overall feel of the project. www.samuseum.org
