AOTMFebruary Artist of the Month
AOTM - FEbGet to know San Antonio artists! The February artist of the month is musician and Conjunto Heritage Taller founder Rodolfo S. Lopez.

Rodolfo Lopez co-founded, and is president of the Conjunto Heritage Taller, a non profit organization in San Antonio, Texas, dedicated to teaching the traditional music played with accordion and bajo sexto. Their mission is to perpetuate this culturally important folk music by teaching it to "youth of all ages."  This endeavor, which is in its 7th year, has been a resounding success with widespread community support.  Rodolfo plays bajo for many of the Taller's presentations and accompanies the students during their classes.

East Side artist Seymour Perkins dies
San Antonio Express News (2/11/09)
Elaine Ayo
"For decades, the self-proclaimed Rev. Seymour Perkins brought his own flavor to the corner of South Hackberry and Nevada streets, eliciting both praise and ire from his neighbors as he battled to save his house from city bulldozers. Perkins, 78, an eccentric self-taught artist who earned a national reputation among collectors of so-called "outsider" art, died Tuesday night at a local hospital, said Carlos Richardson, president of the Denver Heights Neighborhood Association."

Feinstein joins Senate majority in excluding arts from stimulus package
The LA Times (2/08/09)
Mike Boehm
"Maybe the arts just aren't that stimulating. At least that seems to be the sense of the U.S. Senate -- including California Democrat Dianne Feinstein, who joined a wide majority Friday in passing an amendment "to ensure that taxpayer money is not lost on wasteful and non-stimulative projects" such as funding museums, theaters and art centers."

Variety (2/10/09)
Richard Ouzouian
"It may have taken a bit longer than it did in the U.S., but the legit industry in Canada has begun to show signs of vulnerability to the current economic downturn."
