CineFestival 2009 February 5 - 8 Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center 1300 Guadalupe Street The 31st Annual CineFestival in San Antonio is the nation's oldest and longest-running Latino film festival. The four-day event, which kicks off on Thursday, February 5, 2009, will feature screenings, workshops, panel discussions, networking opportunities, gala celebrations and musical performances. Innovative uses of new technology will also be highlighted through competitions, demonstrations of new cameras and software, and the involvement of youth filmmakers from video programs throughout San Antonio. www.cinefestivalsa.org |
Celebrating Black History: Theatrefest 2009 February 6 - 8 Carver Community Cultural Center 226 N. Local artist Henry Rayburn died on January 27 from cancer-related complications Events in Memory of Henry: Celebration of the Life of Henry Rayburn February 7, 6 pm Say Si, 1518, S Alamo Street Music and reflections on Henry's life between 6 and 7pm. Guests are asked to bring a collage, drawing, painting or assemblage that Henry created which is of special meaning, or a memory you have created yourself for the assembly of an "ofrenda", which will be on view at Say Si during the celebration. All treasures will be returned to their owners that evening. February Artist of the Month |
Get to know San Antonio artists! The February artist of the month is musician and Conjunto Heritage Taller founder Rodolfo S. Lopez. Rodolfo Lopez co-founded, and is president of the Conjunto Heritage Taller, a non profit organization in San Antonio, Texas, dedicated to teaching the traditional music played with accordion and bajo sexto. Their mission is to perpetuate this culturally important folk music by teaching it to "youth of all ages." This endeavor, which is in its 7th year, has been a resounding success with widespread community support. Rodolfo plays bajo for many of the Taller's presentations and accompanies the students during their classes. Find out more here.
