Manuel Diosdado Castillo Jr. known to most as Manny or Manyo, died January 6, 2008, on el Dia de Los Reyes. He was 40 years old. In the short time he was on this earth he founded a little organization known as San Anto Cultural Arts Center. That "little" arts agency located in "El Hueso" de San Antonio, has mentored a multitude of young, "at risk" youth. Many of them have gone on to pursue rewarding careers in the arts and some are now employed or on the board of San Anto. He leaves behind a legacy of nurturing community arts and culture. He also leaves behind countless hearts broken by his unexpected departure. He will truly be missed by all of us here at the Office of Cultural Affairs and beyond. A longtime friend of Manny's informs us that Manny asked him to tell us "to remember." In that spirit here a few: Remember Manny joyously, riotously, playing drums with his beloved band, Snowbyrd. Remember what an expert conjunto dancer el Manny was and how he loved Lerma's. Remember Manny at the BBQ pit at countless San Anto fundraising events. Remember how amazing he was with the young people at San Anto, like a cool big brother; nurturing, caring - way cool.
Remember all the contributions he made to those young people y la comunidad in a very real way. Remember the contest he held to name his "classic" vehicle; the winning moniker - Tres Leches! Remember his profound respect and love for Ram de Tacoland. Remember his family, friends and community, in their grief. Remember him in your thoughts and prayers to help him on his journey. Remember to savor every breath, deep and clean and easy; every gliding spin on the dance floor, every refreshing sip of water, every taste, every note of music that lifts your soul, when you hold your dear ones and feel their heart beat, their warmth, their breath, their pure love - offer it to Manny in remembrance. ĦQue viva Manny Castillo! In honor of the creative life force and legacy of Manuel Diosdado Castillo, Jr.,
the following services will be held: Viewing will take place at 1 pm Friday at Castillo Mission Funeral Home (520 N General McMullen), with a rosary at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will take place at 11 am Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church (1321 El Paso), with interment following at San Fernando Cemetery III #3 (1735 Cupples.) There will be a gathering at Inner City Development (1300 Chihuahua) starting immediately after the burial.
