Dia de los Muertos Highlights! | |
Observed on November 2nd, with exhibits and events beginning in October and continuing through the middle of November; Día De Los Muertos is a colorful flurry of traditional and contemporary festivities celebrating ancestral remembrance, and harvest season rituals from Central Mexican indigenous cultures.

Muertitos Fest 2008, 12 - 4pm Exhibit on display: November 1 - 30 SAY Sí, 1518 South Alamo Student exhibits of traditional folk art will be joined by a curated exhibit of "arte Popular". Traditional Ofrendas, family workshops, food booths, artisans, live music and dance performances will add to the high-spirited occasion. First Friday Opening: November 7, 7 - 11pm. www.saysi.org

The 2008 Artist Foundation grant awardees were announced last week and many Creative Capital artists were among the winners or finalists. Award Winners: Karen Mahaffy, Katie Pell, Roberto Prestigiacomo, Hills Snyder and Guillermina Zabala. Finalists: David Alcantar, Mellissa Marlowe, Michele Monseau, Timothy Kramer and Ansen Seale.

Obama and McCain's visions for the arts Los Angeles Times (10/24/08) Kate Linthicum "The presidential candidates disagree over funding for the arts and arts education, with Obama calling for more federal support and McCain calling for less. . . . McCain's campaign has released very little official language on the subject. But two weeks ago it issued this four-sentence statement that calls for funding for arts education to be left to local entities, where 'local priorities allow.' Obama, on the other hand, has made arts proposals a part of his official party platform."

Get to know local San Antonio artists! The October artist of the month is filmmaker Stephen Acevedo. Steve co-wrote and directed the 10-minute dark comedy, Shot. Filmed in downtown San Antonio, Shot premiered in March at SXSW, and recently won the Grand Jury Prize at the San Antonio Local Film Festival. In August, Steve was selected from more than 600 applicants to participate in the Disney-ABC/DGA Television Directing Fellowship. The yearlong fellowship provides aspiring television directors the opportunity to hone their craft and jump-start their careers by working alongside veteran directors on drama and comedy series such as Lost, Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, etc. Shot will be screening at the San Antonio Local Film Festival, 7pm on Oct. 10, 2008 at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre (www.salfilmfest.com).
