LabTenerife Danza Lab

Spend an evening with the artists of one of the San Antonio's sister cities, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Witness the work of the lab's dancers and its artistic coordinator Helena Berthelius, world- renowned choreographer. The unique pieces range from "Sofia," which focuses on man's redirection of bodies of water, to "Mizu no Yukue," the product of first-time collaboration between Asian dancers and the dancers of tenerifedanzalab. Tenerifedanzalab is a contemporary dance laboratory project of the Auditorio de Tenerife, Canary Islands. www.friendsofthecanaryislands.net

"The Willing" is an evening length piece, choreographed by Amber Ortega-Perez, that expresses the thoughts, cares and emotions of military families that have been separated by the Iraq war.  The Willing is not political but endeavors to show the strength required by military families to consistently send their loved ones over seas and live a life of uncertainties. www.jump-start.org

Each October San Antonio celebrates its growth and development as a community from the 1700s until the present. The opening musical tribute is 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. in San Fernando Cathedral in historic downtown San Antonio. This musical tribute will feature the Children's Chorus of San Antonio and The Orchestra of the Incarnate Word. Following the musical tribute is an afternoon of historical and cultural exhibits, musical and dance performances, and fun activities for kids of all ages. www.sanantoniofoundersday.org

The exhibition explores Tim Burton's revolutionary use of stop-motion animation technique, a painstaking process dating back to the origins of cinema in the 1890s. Over a dozen figures, set pieces, and props used in the making of the movie are shown in the exhibition. www.mcnayart.org

October Artist of the Month
SteveGet to know local San Antonio artists! The October artist of the month is filmmaker Stephen Acevedo.
 
Steve co-wrote and directed the 10-minute dark comedy, Shot.  Filmed in downtown San Antonio, Shot premiered in March at SXSW, and recently won the Grand Jury Prize at the San Antonio Local Film Festival.  In August, Steve was selected from more than 600 applicants to participate in the Disney-ABC/DGA Television Directing Fellowship.  The yearlong fellowship provides aspiring television directors the opportunity to hone their craft and jump-start their careers by working alongside veteran directors on drama and comedy series such as Lost, Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, etc. 
 
Shot will be screening at the San Antonio Local Film Festival, 7pm on Oct. 10, 2008 at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre (www.salfilmfest.com).
