AccInternational Accordion Festival

Held every year in the beautiful downtown Riverwalk area on the historic ground of La Villita, the International Accordion Festival features performances, workshops, open mic sessions and accordion jams. On three stages, enjoy ensembles from around the world playing everything from Celtic to Creole, from Conjunto to Quebecois, from Cowboy to Klezmer, Chamame to Chicken Scratch and much more. The festival kicks off on Friday night with a moonlight concert at Arneson River Theatre. The festival is open to the public and admission is free all day Saturday and Sunday. www.internationalaccordionfestival.org

This marks the second year of the San Antonio Local Film Festival, or SAL Film Fest. Each year the festival has screened eight selected local short films and a feature or featurette for this one night celebration of San Antonio filmmakers. This year the festival includes "Shot," the Grand Jury Prize winner, and directed by OCA Artist of the Month Steve Acevedo. www.salfilmfest.com

This free, family-friendly event is a celebration of San Antonio's creative spirit and talent. Attendees can watch while thirty-four premier visual artists turn downtown sidewalks into colorful works of art. Throughout the day the community will be invited to contribute to a freestyle area and help to complete a super-sized street mural; students will work together in teams to design and create their own masterpieces; and kids will take home chalk artworks crafted in the Kidzone. www.artpace.org

Visit the South Flores Arts District this Saturday for the second annual SMART (Supporting Multiple Arts Resources Together) Fair. The festival features events for the entire family, including live music, film, crafts, poetry, workshops, food and more. Through creative services and artistic events SMART is dedicated to raising awareness of the developmental impact of the arts in San Antonio.

The Children's Chorus of San Antonio presents a Friends and Family Concert featuring traditional spirituals and folk songs. CCSA's training choirs, the Junior Chorus and Choristers, will make their season debut along with the youngest singers, the seven- and eight-year old members of the Prelude Choir, on this fall family event. The Children's Chorus of San Antonio is comprised of more than 200 talented and dedicated young musicians from San Antonio and surrounding communities. www.childrenschorussa.org

October Artist of the Month
SteveGet to know local San Antonio artists! The October artist of the month is filmmaker Stephen Acevedo.
 
Steve co-wrote and directed the 10-minute dark comedy, Shot.  Filmed in downtown San Antonio, Shot premiered in March at SXSW, and recently won the Grand Jury Prize at the San Antonio Local Film Festival.  In August, Steve was selected from more than 600 applicants to participate in the Disney-ABC/DGA Television Directing Fellowship.  The yearlong fellowship provides aspiring television directors the opportunity to hone their craft and jump-start their careers by working alongside veteran directors on drama and comedy series such as Lost, Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, etc. 
 
Shot will be screening at the San Antonio Local Film Festival, 7pm on Oct. 10, 2008 at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre (www.salfilmfest.com).
