CurvesReal Women Have Curves
October 3 - 9
University of the Incarnate Word Theatre
4301 Broadway

Share the race against the clock as five Latina garment workers in a tiny East L.A. sewing factory struggle to make 100 dresses in just five days. Their job isn't an easy one; four of them have achieved only temporary residency and one is working illegally, but they face down their fears with humor and along the way they bond; learning to accept their differences and themselves as they unite behind the American dream that makes their labors and sacrifices worthwhile. Immediately following the October 9 performance there will be a discussion of body image, eating disorders, and self-acceptance led by experts in the field. www.uiw.edu/theatre
DogDog Sees God:
Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead

October 3 - 11
Trinity University Theatre, Stieren Theater
One Trinity Place

"Dog Sees God" is an unauthorized parody of Charles Schulz's iconic comic strip. "CB's" dog dies from rabies, his best friend is too burnt out, his sister has gone Goth, his ex-girlfriend has recently been institutionalized, and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any of solace. Drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, and sexual identity collide and careen toward an ending that is haunting and hopeful. www.trinity.edu/departments/speech_and_drama/
RXRx Art: Take your medicine
October 3 - November 1
Bihl Haus Arts
2803 Fredericksburg Road

Bihl Haus Arts and co-organizer Health and Healing Consortium present Rx Art, an exhibit and accompanying series of five workshops that use the arts as a vehicle for healing. This exhibition features works by health professionals who are also artists. The Artist-Healers address how their particular artwork aids in self-care and healing and helps them in their work with clients and patients.  A public reception opens the exhibit to the public Friday from 5:30-8:30 pm. www.RxArtSA.org
VivaViva Mi Cultura
October 3, 5pm
Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center
1300 Guadalupe Street

"Viva Mi Cultura" is a one-hour lecture and demonstration featuring the Guadalupe Dance Company presenting traditional dances, costumes and music of Coahuila, Costa de Nayarit, Veracruz and Jalisco.  Audiences have the opportunity to watch professional dancers perform traditional dances of Mexico, volunteer for a "mini" dance class on stage, and participate in a question and answer session with the dancers at the end of the performance. Free by reservation only. www.guadalupeculturalarts.org

October Artist of the Month
SteveGet to know local San Antonio artists! The October artist of the month is filmmaker Stephen Acevedo.

Steve co-wrote and directed the 10-minute dark comedy, Shot.  Filmed in downtown San Antonio, Shot premiered in March at SXSW, and recently won the Grand Jury Prize at the San Antonio Local Film Festival.  In August, Steve was selected from more than 600 applicants to participate in the Disney-ABC/DGA Television Directing Fellowship.  The yearlong fellowship provides aspiring television directors the opportunity to hone their craft and jump-start their careers by working alongside veteran directors on drama and comedy series such as Lost, Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, etc.

Shot will be screening at the San Antonio Local Film Festival, 7pm on Oct. 10, 2008 at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre (www.salfilmfest.com).
