Zoe Sheehan Saldana: Solo Exhibition Through October 19 Southwest School of Art and Craft Russell Hill Rogers Gallery 1201 Navarro
Zoe Sheehan Saldana, from New York, exhibits work that examines social issues such as domestic security and consumer culture. Her sculptural work combines digital photography, tapestry and cross-stitching. Veronica Riedel's "The Making of Mestiza" is also showing in the Russell Hill Rodgers Gallery. Riedel, from Guatemala, explores the resilient nature of indigenous women through mixed media photographs. The Ursuline Hall Gallery features "Jennifer Khoshbin: Solo Exhibition." Khoshbin, from San Antonio, combines photographs with intricately carved texts in a series of familiar, often iconic, images that address memory and nostalgia. All three exhibitions run through October 19 and open with a public reception on August 28, 5:30 - 7:30 pm. www.swschool.org |
Terrific Treehouses August 30 - Dec 7 San Antonio Botanical Garden 555 Funston
Terrific Treehouses features 9 locally designed interactive tree houses using predominately "green" materials. Visitors are invited to explore the San Antonio Botanical Garden while discovering each unique tree house. The three-day opening weekend, August 30 - September 1 includes family activities for those of all ages. Some of the activities include; games for kids, arts & crafts, origami demonstrations, yoga and an audience participation tree house. Architectural and construction professionals Alan and Natalie Harmon create a paper house with the public's help, using only recycled newspapers, phone directories and masking tape. www.sabot.org |
Hattitude: A Musical Through September 14 Josephine Theater 339 W. Josephine Street This production tells about two entrepreneurial brothers in the hat business, Max Schneider and Sam Schneider. The brothers have opened a tearoom, where ladies meet, eat, talk and shop, while schmoozing over cups of tea. The ladies' stories come alive in this fast-paced, entertaining musical. This energetic show celebrates the triumphs of keeping a positive attitude. Written and directed by Rachelle Neuman with original music by Linda Kaufman. www.josephinetheatre.org |
Fighting for Democracy Through January 18 UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures 801 S. Bowie Street "Fighting for Democracy" uses World War II as a framework to examine the concept of democracy and its relation to minorities. Presented in a multimedia narrative format, the exhibit chronicles the lives of seven ethnically diverse Americans during the World War II era. Their stories all point toward the thematic question of the exhibit: "Who is the 'we' in 'We the People'?" Fighting for Democracy is on loan by the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. www.texancultures.com |
