MagikAlice, A Rock Opera

Experience a musical journey through the heart and mind of Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll on Friday nights with the original 1973 two-act version "Alice, A Rock Opera," recommended for ages 12 and up. Saturday afternoons will take you and your children of all ages on a "Journey to Wonderland," where they'll meet Humpty Dumpty, the Mad Hatter and other beloved characters from the classic story. Magik will hold a special 35th anniversary opening event on Saturday, August 9 at 7 pm. Join past and current cast members, enjoy refreshments after the show and take a historical journey through life in San Antonio during the 70's when Alice first premiered in 1973. www.magiktheatre.org

During the grand opening event the gallery will showcase Michael Hyatt's clay pottery and jewelry. Mike's work is influenced by the art of ancient Mesoamerican cultures and fired with creative glazing techniques. New art by pencil artist Nemo will also be on display for the grand opening. Nemo primarily works with pencil on vellum paper to create intricately drawn subjects composed of freehand swirling circles and spirals. There will also be new art by various local artists including Mark Rue, Marleen Hoover, Karl Lubbering, Bobby Natanson, Johanna Gardner, Alejandro Padilla, Mark Kohnitz, and Momo Brown. www.sanpedrospringsgallery.com

Adriana Garcia explores self-identity in a new series of brilliant large-scale paintings inspired by her family's history with La Carpa Garcia. As part of the exhibition, Bihl Haus will feature "La Carpa: A Mini-Symposium," on Saturday, August 9 from 2-4pm. The symposium begins with a gallery talk by Adriana Garcia on her monumental paintings in the current exhibit. Then, Dr. Michaele Haynes, curator at the Witte Museum, will discuss the history of las carpas, or Mexican tent circuses, which uniquely combined circus elements, such as trapeze and tightrope artists, and vaudeville performances with comic routines and song and dance numbers. The mini-symposium concludes with a special appearance by Virginia Garcia, a performer with the Garcia troupe. www.bihlhausarts.org

A Midsummer Night's Dream is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare, written sometime in the 1590s. It portrays the adventures of four young lovers, their interactions with the Duke and Duchess, Theseus and Hippolyta, and with the fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world. www.sanpedroplayhouse.com

Claire Holliday is retiring as the Chair of the Metals Department of the Southwest School of Art and Craft in San Antonio. Holliday has been an educator in San Antonio for 29 years, and has organized more than 75 visiting artist workshops of national repute at the Southwest School of Art & Craft.
