Myth, Mortals and Immortality:
Works from Museo Soumaya de Mexico Through February 22 Museo Alameda 101 S. Santa Rosa
"Myth, Mortals and Immortality" explores issues that define Mexican art and have prevailed throughout the centuries: the fusion of indigenous and European traditions, the role of Catholicism in the country's idiosyncrasy, naturalism and fantasy, the search for identity, rituals surrounding the mystery of death and life, social activism, and the emblematic icons of "little dolls," suggestive female patterns of sensuality and evocation. Featured artists include Rufino Tamayo, Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, José Agustín Arrieta, Juan Soriano and David Alfaro Siqueiros. www.thealameda.org |
Tosca June 27 - 29 San Antonio Opera Lila Cockrell Theatre 200 E. Market Street
San Antonio Opera closes the 2007-2008 season with the presentation of Puccini's Tosca. Tosca takes place in Rome during the 1800's and showcases the abuse of political power that intensifies a tragic love triangle between the fiery diva Floria Tosca, the handsome painter Mario Cavaradossi and the sadistic police chief Baron Scarpia. The opera will feature renowned conductor Jerome Shannon who will conduct the San Antonio Opera Orchestra and Chorus with John Gillas. There will also be a performance by the Children's Chorus of San Antonio. www.saopera.com |
The Senator Wore Panty Hose Through July 20 Steven Stoli Playhouse 11838 Wurzbach at Lockhill-Selma
Seething with political and religious scandals, this comedy revolves around the failing presidential campaign of Gabby Sandalson, a regular guy whose integrity has all but crippled his bid for the White House. His unscrupulous campaign manager trumps up an implausible sex scandal to garner votes, a scheme that gloriously backfires. www.stolientertainment.com |

SAN ANTONIO
CAM o' war The Current (06/25/08) Elaine Wolff "But we're all on the same team in the end, say artists (and we're moving it to March!) In the relentless heat and sun of a textbook San Antonio summer, a mirage appears, the shimmering image of a four-year-old debate reflected in pools of sweat: Maybe it's time to move Contemporary Art Month to another month - any month that, following the old wives' tale about oysters, has the letter "r" in it." TEXAS ARTIFACTS The Current (06/25/08) Elaine Wolff "Contemporary Art Month isn't the only art fest in the state trying to go all-pro. The Texas Biennial, founded in 2005 in Austin by a loose collective of independent galleries and artists, announced earlier this year that it is significantly changing its focus and selection criteria for next year's show." NATIONAL Cedar Rapids Museum Recovers from Floods NPR, All Things Considered (06/24/08) "Michele Norris talks to Stefanie Kohn, curator for the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, which was surrounded by 15 feet of water at the flood's peak. Kohn tells Norris about the care volunteers are taking to clean and preserve soaked artifacts." INTERNATIONAL Looted artifacts returned to Iraq CBC News (06/22/08) "Jordan handed over nearly 2,500 stolen ancient artifacts to Iraq in a ceremony in Amman on Sunday." Read More |
