Arte Latina: ROAR April 3 - June 8 Blue Star Contemporary Art Center
116 Blue Star
Arte Latina: ROAR features 14 visual artists of all mediums and six prominent writers and is the first time an all woman exhibit has been shown at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center. It is also the first time a Latina feminist exhibit has been the focus. Multimedia installations, photography, fiber art, painting and media art are just some of the types of work which will be showcased in the exhibit. "Unifying artists by their gender and cultural roots inevitably responds to an undeniable pattern of exclusion" says Curator Arturo Almeida "but what this show is about is bringing to light the unique vision and the indomitable spirit of the Latina Artist" The public is invited to the meet the artists and curator at the members opening Thursday, April 3rd from 6-8 pm. www.bluestarart.org |

130 King William Street
The Annual Juried Exhibition awards selected artworks donated cash prizes and accessions selections into the permanent collection. The Original art work is juried by Toby Kamps, Senior Curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. The San Antonio Art League was organized in March 13, 1912. Representing several art groups, the founders sought to achieve a three-fold goal; to provide artists with a place to exhibit their works, to acquire paintings for the public's enjoyment, and to found an art school. Opening reception Sunday, April 6, 3-5 pm. www.saalm.org

Dos: Gilberto Tarin y Roland Mazuca
Through April 26
Bihl Haus Arts
2803 Fredericksburg Road
Gilberto Tarin's elemental yet vibrant palette of blues, roses, and golden yellows laid down over white creates a subtle luminosity at the surface of his paintings. Working with simplified, gentle figures placed in familiar yet disquieting settings--on a hospital gurney, for example-the artist weaves universal narratives about life and death, hope and loss. Gilberto's thoughtful acrylic-on-canvas paintings pair beautifully with Roland Mazuca's new series of drawings on clay. In these works, executed in colored slips, oxides, terra sigillata, and low-fire clay glazes laid down on clay sheets, Roland creates intimate portraits of close friends set in everyday scenes. For Poetry Month and in conjunction with the exhibition, Bihl Haus will present a preview of I Have Walked this Path Before by Jesse Castro featuring real people wearing Jesse's poetry on April 4, at 7 pm followed by a Beat Poets' Potluck. www.bihlhausarts.org |
The cast portrays a bevy of characters in a collection of scenes and songs scaling the onset of middle age and beyond with great wit, humor and pathos. They take a comic look at the "age old" conditions and situations faced in Mid-Life! From reading glasses and mammograms to weekend warriors and proctology exams - all are lampooned with a Saturday Night Live non-sensibility. Everyone will relate to this hilarious, and at times, touching musical about the curiosities and inevitabilities of middle-age. www.cameocenter.com |
