Fer Sure [Maybe], Fer Sure [Not]
March 27 & 28
Teatro ALAS, Youth Theatre Program
SAY Sí Central
1518 South Alamo Street
Teatro ALAS presents its spring production written and performed by the SAY Sí Teatro students. A boy and a girl from two very different high school cliques find themselves enamored with each other, but "Hollister Kids do not go out with EMOs." This modern tale of boy meets girl takes you through the journey of high school cliques via text messaging and social nightmares. Teatro ALAS's mission is an emphasis on empowering youth to become leaders. Students have ownership over their theatrical work, and a voice in all artistic, technical, and creative decisions involved throughout the rehearsal process. The program challenges students to create work that addresses community needs and concerns, challenges prejudices and social Injustice, and celebrates diversity and difference.

Just Words/Palabras de Justicia:
2008 Literary Festival
March 31 - April 6
Our Lady of the Lake University
411 S.W. 24th Street
Social justice in literature is the theme of this year's festival, and includes events with writers such as Naomi Shihab Nye, Jan Jarboe Russell, Wendy Barker, Pablo Miguel Martinez and Sandra Cisneros. "We chose the theme of social justice with the hope that the festival will address the ways that art intersects with issues surrounding social justice. Since all art is inherently political, writers are ethically bound to be conscious of that aspect and manage its incorporation with sensitivity and grace," said Nan Cuba, OLLU assistant professor of English and festival coordinator. All events are free and open to the public. Full schedule for National Poetry Month 2008 here. (PDF) www.ollusa.edu |

Business-arts cooperation called boon to city
Arizona Daily Star (03/13/08)
Ernesto Portillo Jr.
"If Tucson wants to become a cultural center, which could serve as an economic generator, there must be a coalition of businesses, governments, arts groups and the public willing to pitch in. That was the conclusion agreed on by participants in a regional public meeting on Wednesday. The arts and cultural groups must work more closely together to promote their work and value in the region, said Peter Likins, chairman of the Tucson Regional Town Hall, which held the meeting."
