The Lam Collection of Aboriginal Art
Through March 2
UTSA - 1604 Campus
Department of Art and Art History
One UTSA Circle
Characterized by intricate patterns of finely drafted lines and countless layers of dots, Aboriginal art makes use of a wide range of earth tones ground from natural ochre's to brightly colored acrylic pigments. Images range from abstract symbols, depictions of plants and animals, and representations of natural cycles in the landscape. In recent years, Aboriginal Art has received much global recognition for interweaving aesthetic inventiveness, respect of cultural traditions, and active discussion of the role of the arts in daily life and in the historical record. This exhibition includes work from Arnhemland, the Tiwi Islands, the Kimberley, and the central Desert regions. Curated by Scott A. Sherer, Ph.D. 210.458.5685 |

The Dinnerbox

Andrew Rally seems to have it all: fame from his starring role in a hit TV series; a rich, beautiful, girlfriend; the perfect New York apartment; and the chance to play the greatest role of all time. There are, however, a couple of glitches in paradise...his series has been canceled, his girlfriend won't marry him and he hates Hamlet! When Andrew's agent visits him, she reminisces about her brief romance with John Barrymore many years ago, prompting a séance to summon his ghost. The action becomes more hilarious with the entrance of Andrew's deal-making friend from LA, spouting the laid-back hype of the Coast and offering Andrew a fabulous new TV deal worth millions of dollars. www.thecompanytheatre.org |

Dr. Carmen Tafolla is an award-winning poet, an internationally published writer, children's author, performer and scholar. Her most recent bilingual children's book, co-written with Sharyll Teneyuca, on 30s labor activist Emma Tenayuca, That's Not Fair! Emma Tenayuca's struggle for justice, has generated much acclaim. The book tells the struggles of the San Antonio pecan shellers of the 1920s and 1930s, some of the lowest-paid workers in the nation. The official publication date of March 2008 celebrates the anniversary of the successful conclusion of the 1938 strike by the workers.

Public Broadcasters Prepare to Fight Federal Budget Cuts
New York Time Online (02/06/08)
Elizabeth Jensen
"It's a familiar dance: for eight straight years, the Bush administration has proposed deep cuts in federal funds for public broadcasting, and seven times so far, Congress has restored them. But the magnitude of the proposed cuts put forth this week - Patricia Harrison, president of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, called them "draconian" - still sent public broadcasters scrambling."
