KIWI MANA (New Zealand Spirit)
January 11 - February 16
Bihl Haus Arts
2803 Fredericksburg Road
New Zealander Lea-Anne Sheather captures the essence of New Zealand women in the landscape in her paintings. In this exhibition, pairs Sheather's paintings with the documentary photographs of New Zealand scenes by San Antonio photographer Kathy Armstrong. Armstrong's photographs use patterns to isolate icons of common life in New Zealand, while Sheather's paintings of women in contemporary adornments link them with their spiritual environments. The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, January 11 from 5:30-8:30 pm. http://www.bihlhausarts.org/ |

Fully Committed
January 11 - February 17
San Pedro Playhouse
800 West Ashby
Fully Committed has forty wildly diverse characters, all played by the same actor, David Maloof. This devastatingly funny play follows a day in the life of Sam Peliczowski, an out-of-work actor who mans the red-hot reservation line at Manhattan's number-one restaurant. Coercion, threats, bribes, histrionics-a cast of desperate callers will stop at nothing in their zeal to land a prime reservation, or the right table. Amid the barrage, Sam's got his own needs to contend with-his recently widowed dad wants him home for Christmas, and he's up for a choice part at Lincoln Center. www.sanpedroplayhouse.com |
Texas Zydeco
Through January 20
Witte Museum
3801 Broadway
This photographic exhibit is based on the book Texas Zydeco by author Roger Wood and photographer James Fraher, which resulted from years spent traveling the zydeco corridor between Louisiana and Texas. While interviewing and photographing hundreds of authentic musicians, dancers, club owners and fans, they discovered zydeco, both historically and today, belongs not to a state but to all the people of the upper Gulf Coast. www.wittemuseum.org |
Enchanted Princess and the Please
January 12 - 16
Steven Stoli Playhouse
11838 Wurzbach
Princess Suzy has a problem! At her birth, a horrible spell was cast upon her, making her the rudest and worst-mannered princess in the land! In our story, her father, King Henry, has invited several princes to come seek Princess Suzy's hand in marriage. According to the royal rules, Princess Suzy must be married soon if she is to become queen, but each of the seven princes who come to the palace leaves when he discovers just how rude the princess can be! It's up to Prince Rodney, with the help of Bosko the BackYard Pup and the children in the audience, to help Princess Suzy learn how to behave! Will true love be able to break the horrible curse? www.stolientertainment.com |

January Artist of the Month:
Get to know local San Antonio artists! The January artists of the month are Alex Rubio and Vincent Valdez.
Alex Rubio and Vincent Valdez share a special bond with San Antonio community and with each other as mentor and student. Valdez worked with his mentor, artist/muralist Rubio, on murals around the Alamo City, eventually painting on his own. Both artists share their talent by serving their community through education. This year both artists are looking forward to going back to their old high schools to work with students.
