Take a Pill; forget exercise and diet! Quick Fixes...do they really work?
If you believe the commercials, can you afford to neglect exercise and diet?
Is there really any replacement for exercise, sensible diet and water?
Will a pill solve it? How about a bypass or lapband, followed by no
change in diet and exercise. Can you really eat all that you want
and just pop a pill to save yourself from health issues, with no
exercise, like they show on the commercials on TV?
Have you read the fine print, that those pills still recommend exercise
and diet and in addition, you better make sure your liver is in good
working order. Do
you really believe all the commercials on TV? Especially if you make
those commercials you should absolutely know the advertising magic
involved!
I'm not a doctor, and maybe that's a good thing because instead I
was blessed (Thank GOD!) with some intelligence and some ability to think
logically. I was a biology major back in the day, so let me just share
with you some of my local sciency-but-not-too-scientific observations.
The weight loss surgeries (bypass, lap band, etc.),yes, here I have
seen some successes among the obese. Successful or not, everyong has
had to really modify their diet (or they get really really sick), and
the ones that do not exercise learn that they MUST exercise to
continue, start or maintain the weight loss. I have several friends and
even some students that if they stop moving, they are STUCK, and a few
that needed to lose more than 200, only lost less than 100 and that's
it because they DO NOT MOVE THEIR BODY. The diet, by the way, that
accompanies those surgeries is extreme (( I would bet if you did only
required diet, with no surgery, due to the restrictions you would
probably lose a lot of weight anyway.))
I personally am way too much a fan of the digestive system to consider a personal plumbing re-route.
I have never met anyone that took a pill for weightloss and maintained
the weight loss, ever. If you know of any case studies, please let me
know. What I have observed is that they run out of pills (due to
finances, whatever reason), and then the weight lost comes back with a
vengence (the amount of weight that they lost and then more).
Maybe you sought out a pill to help your metabolism? If we know logically that all things are filtered by the liver, and If
your liver is the catalyst of your metabolism, then how is adding more
toxins (pills) to that filter going to help renew your metabolism?
Anyway, I would love to hear some successes. Even my friends that have
been on programs to lose due to diabetes, etc. have always gained it
all back. Love your Liver!
The
crash diets. Yes we all want to "kickstart" our weight loss. Frying
our metabolism, especially if you are already concerned about metabolic
syndromes, etc. is not going to help you! Couple this with starvation
and now you are robbing your ORGANS of the nutrients that they need to
function. The body is a system
Diet drinks rather than water? Sorry, it ain't going to work. You
can Tab and Fresca all day long but your metabolism works with WATER.
Like oil for your car, you need WATER. I hate to be a mean mom about
it, but I did not write the rule book of the body! It's Water. Not a
latte, not a super caffiene soda drink, .....it's WATER. The Garden of
Eden was not full of splenda and aspartame for a reason.
So again I ask you....are these really shortcuts, or will they cost
your more time and money later, or even cut years off of your
longevity? Do we really know the answer to that?

Ask Michele the Trainer
Will lifting weights make me bulk up?
For women, the short answer is NO. It is actually quite the contrary; if you TONE your muscles it will get SMALLER rather than larger. Would you rather look toned or flabby? We MUST strength train. The more muscles you have the more calories you burn even while you are resting. The more % muscle your body is, the more calories you burn for doing NOTHING. Therefore, if you are trapped being sedentary (i.e. at the office), if you LOVE being sedentary (i.e. watching tv)...either way you will burn more calories at REST if your body is more % muscle than fat.
Men have testosterone and depending on HOW they train, can make them build bulk muscle, but they really have to train at the MAXIMUM weight they can lift for very very few repetitions. If you are lifting so much that you can barely do 3 reps, then yes, you might bulk up like Hanz and Franz. Unless they are competing, I see very few folks train like this anymore, though every gym seems to have like 4 of them. :)
Note that if you are supplementing testosterone, in addition to becoming The Bearded Lady, you could bulk up, and perhaps you have more to worry about :).
Most people that workout to be functional, agile, quick or into endurance sports, do NOT want to be bulky. For example, Jackie Chan is very agile and strong; he is not bulky and moves very well.
If you lifting/doing 10 or more repetitions, you should be fine
It is very good and functional to be STRONG and STABLE. I personally want to be very strong. Strength training is also very very good for our BONE DENSITY.

Jeff Galloway, Marathon Guru, Promotes Water Running (with belt) as BEST cross training for running
Well Gee, it's about time!
Jeff says, "Water Running
The best cross training activity I've found, that can improve
your running, is running in the water.
I've found that water running can improve running form, maintain
running conditioning while injured, serve as a substitute for a
short run day, once a week, and strengthen hip and leg muscles to
reduce injury risk.
It's best to use the deep end of the pool."
He plans to write more on the following topics,
"Water running can replace one of your short runs each week."
"When injured, water running can maintain running adaptations at
a high level."
this is LONG OVERDUE but I'm happy to see it in print!
