The right consultant can provide you with expertise, knowledge, objectivity and people management skills.   The wrong consultant can cost your nonprofit time, money and morale.  How can you make it work for your nonprofit and for the consultant?  This interactive workshop emphasizes the client's role in managing this relationship and the process.  Topics include:

· Defining your needs clearly

· Selecting the right consultant for your nonprofit

· Negotiating with the consultant before and during the consultancy, and

· Avoiding typical traps clients and consultants fall into.

Special Board Member Fundraising Forum
(evening event)

Wednesday, June 8, 2011, 5:00 to 9:00 P.M.

All board members know that their organizations need to raise more money, and most are aware that they have some responsibility in making this happen.  But what does this mean, really?  In this interactive workshop, Kim Klein will clarify what your responsibilities for fundraising are (and are not) and help you find some strategies that are a fit for your unique personality, skills and time.   She will help you improve your ability to ask for money and also to know when it's okay to say, "No, I don't want to do that."  Meet board members from other Hartford area nonprofits, compare notes with them, and learn how to create a culture of accountability on your board.  Get excited about how you can help your organization become stronger and more effective.

Nonprofit Sustainability:  Strategic Decision-Making for Financial Viability

Featuring Jan Masaoka, co-author of Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability

Thursday, April 14, 2011, 8:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Many nonprofit leaders are feeling stuck. . . wanting to move forward but not knowing where the money will come from.  Traditional planning processes may not offer sufficient practical solutions to the issues and dilemmas confronting today's nonprofits. This fast-moving session will help you understand your current business model (even if you haven't articulated it that way) and consider how to make changes that will help you adapt to a new reality.  The tools and approach are based on Jan Masaoka's new book. The session will include some limited time for you to work with others in your organization to develop the business model that's right for you, and help you focus on strategic goals in the context of their financial implications.

Leaders on Board Can Help You Find New Board Members

Leadership Greater Hartford has entered its third year of Leaders on Board, an exciting project supported by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, to help nonprofit organizations identify new candidates for their boards of directors.  Over the last two years, 55 nonprofit organizations have used Leaders on Board to place more than 145 diverse and talented individuals on their boards.

Leadership Greater Hartford has drawn from the ranks of area employers and from its 3,500 person leadership network to identify prospective board candidates.  These candidates represent a wide variety of skill areas and demographic groups.

Interested candidates participate in a training session that helps them better understand the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards.  Candidates are then introduced to a variety of area nonprofits in an effort to help them find an organization that fits their interests and can benefit from their unique skills and background.

Most of the referrals are accomplished through an innovative approach called Express Match in which a number of interested board candidates are brought together with several nonprofits.   Candidates meet with representatives of each nonprofit and indicate whether there is mutual interest in pursuing a relationship.  This process exposes nonprofits to a large number of candidates whom they otherwise may never have met, while allowing candidates to meet a range of nonprofits they may not have found on their own.

Leaders on Board charges interested nonprofits a reasonable annual membership fee to participate in the program.  To learn more about Leaders on Board, click here and contact Andre Santiago at 860-951-6161 ext 11, or andre.santiago@leadershipgh.org.
