CAFÉ takes its mission of linking education with industry very seriously. Through its website, www.CafeMeetingPlace.com, its on–line magazine, “The Gold Medal Classroom,” and its schedule of workshops and annual conference, CAFÉ strives to bring up–to–date information and techniques to educators/trainers from the industry our students are entering.
This year CAFÉ has some exceptional opportunities to not only learn new skills, but to network and become inspired by best practices in education.
Our host schools are chosen for their high level of expertise which they are willing to share with attendees.
Our presentations include hearing from educators. This year some of the topics at the Leadership Conference are:
Successful Student Competitions (from winners of ProStart competitions)
Bridging the Gap between the classroom and industry (from a professor of hospitality who has written a text book on this topic)
Reaching Digital Millennials (from an instructor who is in the trenches every day, just like you)
The influence of media on your students/program (a panel of educators—their thoughts and suggestions)
Green applications for your program (from a program that has pioneered “green” education)
Social networks that your students are being influenced by (more real–life ways to make your “real” life easier)
Innovative Curriculum Changes (presented by Dr. Fred Mayo—educator extraordinaire!)
Our workshop topics this year range from French Cooking to Healthy Menus to the Latin Table. We provide great educational experiences and you provide the terrific networking! Go to CAFÉ's Events page for more information
Why New Leaders Fail
Dr. Linda Schaumann Reese, principal of Leader OnBoarding, a corporate consulting firm, will be presenting on the topic of leadership at a break out session during the CAFÉ Leadership Conference. An article on the topic quotes two major contributing factors to why new leaders fail:
Companies fail to build a systemic onboarding process and as a consequence assimilation is left to a combination of happenstance and personal initiative and
New leaders misread and misjudge the dynamics, expectations and requirements of their new role and as a result missteps, mismatched expectations and cultural mis-estimation lead to an erosion of the early support base.
Dr. Reese will explain how we can look at key elements of leadership and avoid some traps such as:
Avoiding being a change agent before you have all the information needed
Trying to do too much too soon
Misreading the culture and style of your group
Polarizing the group between the new and the old guard
Taking too long to make key changes and being sucked into status quo
Acting on incomplete knowledge
Failure to build a power base
Mismanaging the personal transition of family and new community
We couldn't put on the quality programs every year without our industry partners! Please go to our website to link to their sites and check out our Industry Giveaways for educational materials they have developed for your classrooms.
