Revisiting Gender in the New Order Film Culture (1965-1998)
Presentation by Intan Paramaditha, Department of Cinema Studies, NYU
Moore Hall 319, Tokioka Room - UHM
12 Noon- 2:00pm, 1 April 2011

One crucial feature of the Indonesian cinema revival after the downfall of the New Order authoritarian regime in 1998 is the entrance of more women into the film scene. Within a relatively more democratic political climate, this coincides with the emergence of new women writers, artists, and activists who challenge the New Order gender constructions and frankly examine how women experience their bodies, desires, and sexuality. Today women have significant roles in film production, exhibition, and distribution as producers, directors, scriptwriters, and film festival organizers. more info

The Privatization of Metro Manila: Wither the Public Good?
Presentation by Dr. Gerard Finin
Moore Hall 319 (Tokioka Room), UHM
2:00pm - 3:30pm, 6 April 2011

Public space that is open and accessible to the masses is ordinarily viewed as a critical element in the planning of livable cities. During its first 375 years, Spanish and American concepts of public space played a key role in Manila's growth.  While these colonial influences continue to shape notions of scale and space, major transformations in the post-independence era, especially the relationships between public and private spheres of activity, are critical to understanding how public space is being redefined in contemporary Metro Manila. more info

java goldGold in Java: Ritual Necessity and Courtly Indulgence
Yale University Art Gallery
Presentation by Ruth Barnes, Thomas Jaffe Curator of Indo-Pacific Art at Yale
12:20pm, 6 April 2011

In the early centuries of the Common Era, a civilization rose up in Indonesia that became a locus of trade, culture, and religion, the most impressive traces of which were found on the island of Java. Old Javanese Gold presents a selection of around 200 objects from the Hunter Thompson Collection, one of the founding donations to the Gallery's new Department of Indo-Pacific Art, including jewelry, sculptures, coins, statues, containers, and accessories. more info

ManuguinEarly Srivijaya in Southern Sumatra: The Extension of Buddhism
Colloquium with Professor Pierre-Yves Manguin, EFEO, French School of Asian Studies
Bunche Hall, UCLA
Los Angeles, CA USA
3:00pm - 5:00pm, 7 April 2011

Archaeological data gathered since the 1990s in South Sumatra and Jambi provinces of Indonesia reveal the broad extension of the Srivijaya polity during the years that preceded or immediately followed its foundation at Palembang in the 670s and 680s. The spatial distribution of Buddhist sanctuaries and sculptures mark the outreach of the growing political center. The shared styles of these statues also reveal the connections between the newly established Sumatran power and other contemporary polities in Southeast Asia. more info
