Congratulations Professor Vina Lanzona!

Dr. Lanzona was awarded the Kenneth W. Baldridge Prize for her book, Amazons of the Huk Rebellion as announced at the annual Phi Alpha Theta conference. The Kenneth W. Baldridge Prize is sponsored by the Department of History at Brigham Young University - Hawai'i, and is awarded for the best history book written by a resident of Hawai'i. more info

Long Ya Men or Dragon's Teeth Gate served as an important navigational landmark for ancient mariners before the rocks were blown up in the late 19th century to widen the entrance into what is now known as Keppel Harbour.  Historically, this deep water passage leading into the harbor was significant as it carried the hopes, stories and dreams of our those who traveled and depended on the trading for their livelihoods. more info

Archaeological data gathered since the 1990s in South Sumatra and Jambi provinces of Indonesia reveal the broad extension of the Srivijaya polity during the years that preceded or immediately followed its foundation at Palembang in the 670s and 680s. The spatial distribution of Buddhist sanctuaries and sculptures mark the outreach of the growing political center. The shared styles of these statues also reveal the connections between the newly established Sumatran power and other contemporary polities in Southeast Asia. more info 

 

Featured Film: Living With The Tiger is an intimate and moving story about a group of HIV infected orphans in Thailand that have been abandoned by society. Despite their traumatic experiences, they embark on the most unlikely of ventures for a group of teenagers from the countryside: a performance in an opera.

The Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) announces the availability of its 2012/2013 Folk & Traditional Arts Culture Learning Grants application for eligible non-profit organizations. Organizations must have at least one year of experience in programs in which children and/or families learn through hands-on experience about their own culture's artistic traditions (e.g., song and music, dance, storytelling, arts and crafts). Applications for folk and traditional arts from non-Hawaiian Pacific Islander and Southeast Asian cultures in Hawaiʻi will be considered.  more info
