The Center for Southeast Asian Studies shares in the world's grief following the earthquake and tsunami tragedy in Japan. For those of you desiring to donate funds for humanitarian assistance, we suggest the following local and national initiatives: First Hawaiian Bank Japan-Hawaii Relief Fund Those interested in making a contribution to the Japan-Hawaii Relief Fund may do so at any First Hawaiian Bank branch through 31 March. All contributions to the fund will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Congratulations Professor Vina Lanzona! 
Dr. Lanzona was awarded the Kenneth W. Baldridge Prize for her book, Amazons of the Huk Rebellion as announced at the annual Phi Alpha Theta conference. The Kenneth W. Baldridge Prize is sponsored by the Department of History at Brigham Young University - Hawai'i, and is awarded for the best history book written by a resident of Hawai'i. more info

The Third Annual Filipino Film Festival The Doris Duke Theatre Honolulu, HI USA Festival dates: 19 -26 March 2011 Opening night reception: 6:00 - 7:30 pm, 19 March 2011 The Doris Duke Theatre gets its yearly dose of Pinoy flavor with the Third Annual Filipino Film Festival, featuring six new films from some of the Philippines' top filmmakers. Long Ya Men or Dragon's Teeth Gate served as an important navigational landmark for ancient mariners before the rocks were blown up in the late 19th century to widen the entrance into what is now known as Keppel Harbour. Archaeological data gathered since the 1990s in South Sumatra and Jambi provinces of Indonesia reveal the broad extension of the Srivijaya polity during the years that preceded or immediately followed its foundation at Palembang in the 670s and 680s. The spatial distribution of Buddhist sanctuaries and sculptures mark the outreach of the growing political center. The shared styles of these statues also reveal the connections between the newly established Sumatran power and other contemporary polities in Southeast Asia. more info

The Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) announces the availability of its 2012/2013 Folk & Traditional Arts Culture Learning Grants application for eligible non-profit organizations. Organizations must have at least one year of experience in programs in which children and/or families learn through hands-on experience about their own culture's artistic traditions (e.g., song and music, dance, storytelling, arts and crafts).
