EWC East Timor"East Timorese Elites, 1850 to the Present"

Presented by Dr. Douglas Kammen, National University of Singapore (NUS)

East-West Center

John A. Burns Hall, Room 2118

Honolulu, HI USA

12 - 1pm, 18 February 2011

Analysis of East Timorese society and politics today is characterized by a sharp divide between the notion that, with the entry of the UN in 1999, Timor was a tabula rasa (blank slate), on the one hand, and a view that the country's problems can be traced to neglect of an original Timorese culture and history. Dr. Kammen will argue that the starting point for any serious discussion must begin with the historical evolution of East Timorese elites under Portuguese tutelage in the mid-19th century. more info
