Plenary Speaker - Wayan Arka (Australian National University/Udayana University)
"Language management and minority language maintenance in Indonesia: Strategy issues" Location: Keoni Auditorium, UHM 4:25 - 5:30pm, 12 February 2011 This paper discusses strategic issues in language 'management' (Spolsky 2009) and its complexity in relation to the maintenance of minority languages in contemporary Indonesia. Within Indonesia it is argued that language can be managed and that it should be managed as part of a national language policy framework (among other means). more info Association for Asian Studies and International Convention of Asia Scholars Joint Conference

The Prize was established in 1990 with a generous gift from Grant Goodman, Professor Emeritus, Department of History, University of Kansas, and was first awarded in 1994 to Father John Schumacher, SJ. more info Book Spotlight: Diary of the War: WWII Memoirs of Lt. Col. Anastacio Campo
by Virginia Yap Morales 2006, Ateneo de Manila University Press Lt. Col. Anastacio Campo's diary is a revealing memoir of a Filipino officer stationed in Davao City at the outbreak of World War II. There are relatively few Filipino first-person accounts of the war and most of these are from Bataan or Manila. Dr. Gini Gorlinski on the Sampé' (Borneo lute) of Sarawak CSEAS at Northern Illinois Unviersity Room 110, Campus Life Building 12:00 - 12:50pm, 11 February 2011 Among most upriver minority groups of Sarawak, Malaysia, the playing of the sampé' (the Borneo lute) has traditionally been assoc iated with men. However, recently a nascent contingent of young female sampé' players has appeared on the scene in Kuching, the state capital. The Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian and Malay (COTIM) and Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana(UKSW) are now jointly planning a nine-week intensive program in advanced Indonesian hosted by several institutions in Indonesia and Malaysia. more info Summer Language Study USINDO Gadjah Mada University Location: Yogyakarta, Indonesia Deadline: 1 March 2011 USINDO runs an intensive ten-week language and general studies program held at Gadjah Mada University for U.S. students selected in a competitive application process. The language program is run by INCULS (Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service) at Gadjah Mada University. Dr. Muhamad Ali is currently an assistant professor in the Dept. of Religious Studies at UC Riverside. His most recent works include the book Bridging Islam and the West: An Indonesian View (2009) and a journal article "'They are not All Alike': Indonesian Intellectuals' Perception of Judaism and Jews (2010). more info
