 From Helpful to Hopeful to Harmful: Policies & NGOs' Effects on the Health & Human Rights of Vietnamese Sex Workers in Cambodia Presented by Dr. Anastasia Hudgins, Temple University Co-sponsored by UHM Department of Anthropology Location: Saunders Hall 345 3:00pm - 5:00pm, 20 January 2011 Through an anthropology of risk, this paper addresses how NGOs position themselves as able to resolve complex problems. Dr. Hudgins will focus on a group of debt-bonded sex workers in Cambodia, the rescue efforts of a US-based NGO, and the 100% Condom Use Policy promoted by the World Health Organization and the Cambodian Ministry of Health. more info
 Lecture: Subtitle It! Access to Southeast Asian Cinema Resources Northern Illinois University Campus Life Building, Rm 110 Location: DeKalb, IL USA 12:00pm-12:50pm, 21 January 2011 Paul Rausch, associate director and outreach coordinator of the University of Hawaiʻi's Center for Southeast Asian Studies, will kick off the center's weekly lecture series with a discussion of Southeast Asian cinema. Rausch will discuss the value and use of subtitles in Southeast Asian film both as a tool in language classrooms and as a tool for outreach in the English-speaking world. He will also discuss how films provide a unique visual history of a country's film culture. more info
 Nominations for the Goodman Prize in Philippine Historical Studies Deadline: 15 February 2011 The Philippine Studies Group of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is pleased to announce the request for nominations for the Grant Goodman Prize, which is awarded every two years for outstanding contributions to Philippine historical studies. The Prize was established in 1990 with a generous gift from Grant Goodman, Professor Emeritus, Department of History, University of Kansas, and was first awarded in 1994 to Father John Schumacher, SJ. more info

The Asian Cultural Council aims to raise at least PHP 5 million this year for our Filipino artists, by providing grants to study and be exposed to other artists in Asia and in the United States. Some noted ACCP grantees include Lucrecia Kasilag and Jose Maceda (both National Artists for Music); filmmaker Tikoy Aguiluz; Jose Joya (CCP Gawad Awardee and National Artist for Visual Arts) and Alice Reyes (founder of Ballet Philippines).

Al-'ILM: Science and Innovation in the Islamic World Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia Location: Kuala Lumpur Exhibition dates: 25 February - 29 May 2011 Al- 'ilm (knowledge) in Islam is guided by the Qur'an and Hadith. Through the pursuit of knowledge, Muslims became renowned innovators. Most of these individuals were able to innovate after studying the theories of classical antiquity or through the experience of their own lives. Teaching and Visiting Research Fellowships for 2011-2012 The Center for the Pacific Rim University of San Francisco Deadline: 28 February 2011 The Center for the Pacific Rim at the University of San Francisco is an interdisciplinary center that fosters, in its multiple aspects, the study of the Asia-Pacific Region. Dr. Muhamad Ali is currently an assistant professor in the Dept. of Religious Studies at UC Riverside. His most recent works include the book Bridging Islam and the West: An Indonesian View (2009) and a journal article "'They are not All Alike': Indonesian Intellectuals' Perception of Judaism and Jews (2010). more info

Film Series

The Wednesday Night Film Series opened the spring 2011 semester with the UH subtitled LIVING IN FEAR (Viet Nam, 2005). Next Wednesday, we present the psychological thriller from Indonesia, PINTU TERLARANG (The Forbidden Door).
