Angkor Wat was a Hindu temple, built to honor God and King in the early 12th century CE in northwestern Cambodia. Through the centuries, the Khmers never abandoned Angkor Wat as their spiritual center.
This lecture will review our current knowledge of Angkorian period economy and social organization, and discuss findings from the 2010 field season. more info

Designed to promote Malaysian studies at Cornell, the endowment provides support for Cornell students, either Malaysians enrolled in Southeast Asian Studies or other students whose focus is on Malaysia. A portion of this fund is also used to purchase books related to Malaysia. more info

Hmong in Comparative Contexts Conference

Recently, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Minnesota have jointly established the "UW-UM Hmong Studies Consortium." Focusing on critical scholarship, the conference will consider the Hmong and their interactions and relations with other ethnic groups, especially those in Asia but also the Hmong diaspora in other parts of the world, including the United States. more info

At the next joint AAS-ICAS meeting in Honolulu March 31 - April 3,  the Asian Educational Media Service (AEMS) will be organizing video screenings held in conjunction with the meeting.  This year all screenings will be held in a state-of-the-art 300 seat theater at the conference site, and we hope to be able to invite some of the filmmakers for Q&A. more info

Jesica McDonough
(MA Asian Studies - Thai, 2009) is living in the province of Nakhon Phanom, which is on the northeastern boarder of Thailand, a stone's throw from Laos. She describes her home as a relatively undeveloped, but very safe and lovely city. She is currently the field director for World Teach's program in Thailand, which has 14 volunteer teachers from U.S. working in the province this year.
