From Temples to Angkorian Khmers: Findings from the 2010 Field Season Co-Sponsored by the UHM Department of Anthropology Dr. Miriam Stark, Department of Anthropology, University of Hawai'i-Mānoa 12:00N - 1:30pm, 19 November 2010
Angkor Wat was a Hindu temple, built to honor God and King in the early 12th century CE in northwestern Cambodia. Through the centuries, the Khmers never abandoned Angkor Wat as their spiritual center. This lecture will review our current knowledge of Angkorian period economy and social organization, and discuss findings from the 2010 field season. more info

Lecture: Nationalism and the Multiple Meanings of Independence in the Republic of Vietnam, 1954-1963 UC Berkeley Institute of East Asian Studies 2223 Fulton, 6th Floor, 6F Conference Room Berkeley, CA USA 12:30-2:00pm, 17 November 2010 Nu-Anh Tran is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at UC Berkeley. Her dissertation focuses on nationalism in the Republic of Vietnam, 1954-1965. Her archival research in Vietnam was supported by a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad fellowship. She is currently a Graduate Fellow with the Center for Comparative Study of Right-Wing Movements at UC Berkeley. more info

The Asia Research Institute of NUS invites applications from citizens of Asian countries enrolled for a fulltime advanced degree at a university in an Asian country (except Singapore) for consideration for the award of Asian Graduate Student Fellowships. These fellowships are offered to current graduate students doing their Master's or PhD degrees and working in the Humanities and Social Sciences on Southeast Asian topics, and will allow the recipients to be based at NUS for an "in residence fellowship" for a period of three months. more info

Clark and Arlene Neher Graduate Fellowship for the Study of Southeast Asia Northern Illinois University, Center for Southeast Asian Studies Deadline: 1 February 2010 Through an endowment established by Clark and Arlene Neher, this fellowship will pay $5,200 toward educational expenses in addition to a tuition waiver from the graduate school. ANRC Overseas Travel Fellowships for PhD Students Australia-Netherlands Research Collaboration Deadline: 25 February 2011
ANRC provides funding support for research teams to hold discussion-focussed workshops on particular research themes in Australia, The Netherlands and Southeast Asia; and for students to undertake research work or advanced training. The Milton L. Barnett Scholarship Cornell Southeast Asia Program Deadline: 11 February 2011
This endowment in honor of Milton L. Barnett was initiated by the generous gift of Siew Nim Chee (Cornell M.I.L.R. 1953). Designed to promote Malaysian studies at Cornell, the endowment provides support for Cornell students, either Malaysians enrolled in Southeast Asian Studies or other students whose focus is on Malaysia. A portion of this fund is also used to purchase books related to Malaysia. more info

Alumni Spotlight

(MA Asian Studies - Thai, 2009) is living in the province of Nakhon Phanom, which is on the northeastern boarder of Thailand, a stone's throw from Laos. She describes her home as a relatively undeveloped, but very safe and lovely city. She is currently the field director for World Teach's program in Thailand, which has 14 volunteer teachers from U.S. working in the province this year.
