The standard view of Vietnamese history argues that after 1,000 years of Chinese rule, Vietnam became independent because the Vietnamese had their own distinct identity which supposedly emerged prior to the millennium of Chinese rule. Dr. Liam Kelley presents an alternative view that this distinct "Vietnamese" identity only began to take form in the medieval period, when members of the Sinicized elite sought to invent a local identity for themselves... more info

Alumni Spotlight



Christian Razukas (MA, Asian Studies, 1st from left, in a cameo role on the set of Nia Dinata's upcoming film) finished an exchange semester at the National University of Singapore and now works as an editor at the Jakarta Post. Christian and fellow journalist Teguh Santosa (MA, Political Science) welcomed Professor Emeritus Alice Dewey (Anthropology) to Jakarta for a seminar in March 2010 to discuss Anne Dunham-Soetoro's (Ph.D., Anthropology) dissertation on micro-financing in Indonesia. Dewey spoke on a panel with Teguh, Jakarta Post columnist Julia Suryakusuma, the Minister of Marine and Fisheries Fadel Muhammad, Jakarta's Deputy Governor Aurora Tambunan, and the Vice President of the Indonesian Senate.
