Can converting to another religion change your ethnicity? Can you be born into a religious identity that stays with you throughout your life, no matter what religion you actually practice? Can you be excluded from belonging to the place where you grew up because you have the "wrong" religion? Throughout the modern history of Southeast Asia examples abound of the importance of religion in defining the boundaries of identity. This class will use ethnography, coverage of current events, film and examination of popular culture to examine the link between religion and identity in contemporary Southeast Asia... more info

Congrats to Henry Cheng -
2010 Luce Foundation Fellow
Henry Luce Foundation, in partnership with the Asia Foundation

Henry Cheng, a 2009 UH Mānoa biological engineering graduate and former UH Regents Scholar, was recently awarded a scholarship from the Luce Scholars Program, a prestigious and nationally competitive fellowship program.  Although UH Mānoa is not a nominating institution, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a participating institution where Cheng conducted research, nominated him.  His year-long internship placement at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand will allow him to work on pandemic preparedness projects... more info
