CSEAS Speaker Series Event
Disaster Management & Humanitarian Assistance in Asia - Free and Open to the Public Presented by Jessica Ear Adler, Associate Professor, Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies Co-sponsored by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and the William S. Richardson School of Law Tokioka Room, Moore Hall, UH Mānoa 12:00 PM, Friday, 23 October 2009

Précis Each year an estimated 43% of the world's disasters occur in Asia resulting in 82% of the world's disaster deaths, 84% of the world's total affected population and 75% of the world's disaster damage (IFRC Report 2009). Such alarming statistics raises questions of why, how and most importantly, what can the local and global community do about it?
This lecture will focus on understanding the background and types of disasters that occur in Asia. We will discuss developmental shifts and trends that cause disasters in the region. Lastly we will analyze the disaster management cycle and examine country case studies to identify challenges and opportunities in international disaster management and humanitarian assistance.

Must nations have 'founding fathers', and nationalist movements
charismatic leaders? Does nationalism differ in this respect from any
other mass movement? If nationalism is a species of secular religion,
is it also therefore a cult of the hero or heroine? How important is
leadership for the national cause, and what are its effects for good or
ill? These are some of the questions which the ASEN's 20th Anniversary
Conference seeks to address.

Golden Reawakening: 60s and 70s Cambodian Film Festival and Exhibition Phnom Penh, Cambodia 17 to 25 October 2009
The team
of Kon Khmer Koun Khmer (Cambodian Films, Cambodian Generation) is
pleased to invite you to the opening of the 1960s and 1970s Cambodian
film festival and exhibition "Golden Reawakening". From 1960 to 1975,
Cambodian film studios produced more than 350 films and there were
about 30 movie theatres in Phnom Penh. Today, only 33 films remain
available. Lux Theatre is the last surviving movie theatre. Only a few
directors and film stars survived the Khmer Rouge regime. This special event serves as a link between generations and brings
together a number of surviving directors and film stars from 1960 to
1975 with many talented young artists from today's art scene.

Blog - Southeast Asia Movie Theater Project

This blog is a photographic archive of
derelict or converted movie theaters in Southeast Asia. Ever since the
convenience of the home entertainment center has become widely
available, movie theater-going has been on the path to ext.inction.
Declining audiences and rising operational costs have made the business
feasible only for larger conglomerates, while the independent,
family-run theater has been squeezed out of the picture. Here their
memories are kept alive. Going or gone, but not forgotten.
