Talentime

A talent search competition has matched two hearts - that of Melur, a Malay-mixed girl, and an Indian male student, Mahesh. Melur, with her melodious voice, singing whilst playing the piano is one of the seven finalists of the Talentime competition of her school organized by Cikgu Adibah. Likewise Hafiz, enthralling with his vocalist talent while playing the guitar, divides his time between school and his mother, who is hospitalized with a brain tumor.  (Source: HIFF)

East-West Center Event - Expansion of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) in montane mainland Southeast Asia and implications for the environment and human livelihoods
Saunders Hall, UH Mānoa
12:00 PM, Thursday, 15 October, 2009

Montane mainland Southeast Asia (MMSEA) is a large, ecologically vital region comprising approximately half the land area of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and China's Yunnan Province. Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) is the major commercial crop replacing traditional agriculture and secondary forests in the region, a direct result of strong market demands from China, the world's largest consumer.  This talk will focus on where rubber is being planted, current and future demand for rubber, and implications of these changes for the environment (water, biodiversity, carbon) and human livelihoods.
