A Message from the Director

Dear Friends,

As you know, the earthquakes and aftershocks suffered by Padang and the surrounding areas last week cost well over a thousand lives, and with the destruction of so many houses hundreds of thousands of people are homeless. Although all the victims of this tragedy desperately need assistance, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Hawai'i has special connections with several individuals from Padang who have been valued teachers in our CSEAS-supported randai programs.  We know that Pak Katik, Pak Edy Utama, Pak Halim and Ibu Neli are all safe, although we are still awaiting word from others.

Because our friends are in urgent need of financial aid, Professor Kirstin Pauka has agreed to act as a point person for the collection of checks, which she can then combine and bank-wire to Padang.  This will be the fastest way of ensuring that the funds reach their destination.  As Kirstin has noted, it would also provide real moral support if we can demonstrate that former students and Hawai'i friends of our Indonesian teachers and colleagues cared enough to help.  If you are willing to assist (even a small amount can help) please contact Kirstin at pauka@hawaii.edu.

Checks should be made out to her and can be sent to:
Prof. Kirstin Pauka
Department of Theatre & Dance
University of Hawaii at Manoa
1770 East West Road
Honolulu, Hawaii 96822

Please write "Padang / Pak Katik" in the bottom left-hand corner.  Please send your contributions by 14 October 2009 and Kirstin will send copies of the individual checks together with a cover letter.

All of us in the Center thank you for your generosity and for your continuing support.

Cheers,

Barbara Watson Andaya
Director, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, University of Hawaii at Mānoa
