Project Update - Lower Mekong Archaeological Project (LOMAP)
Co-Directed by Dr. Miriam Stark (UH Dept. of Anthropology) and H.E. Chuch Phoeurn (Ministry of Culture, Cambodia)
Funded by NASA Space Archaeology Grant
Mekong Delta, CAMBODIA
Summer 2009

Over the Summer of 2009, the Lower Mekong Archaeological Project  (LOMAP), which has been ongoing since 1996, completed another season of field research in Cambodia.  UH Anthropology graduate students Heng Piphal, Rachel Hoerman, and Shawn Fehrenbach participated in this project.  Other participants included Alison Carter (graduate student at UW-Madison), Chan Sovichetra and Phan Nady (Ministry of Culture, Cambodia), and other student participants from the Royal University of Fine Arts.

During the 2009 field season, LOMAP members concentrated efforts on ground-truthing a methodology of identifying archaeological sites through analysis of aerial and satellite imagery.  This web gallery is a collection of personal images shot by the crew members of the LOMAP 2009 field season.

Project Update - Establishment of the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre
Directed by Dr. Tansen Sen
Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, National University of Singapore, SINGAPORE

The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore has recently established a new Centre, named the Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre, which will undertake research on historical interactions among Asian societies and civilizations. The Centre aims to serve as a forum for comprehensive study of the ways in which Asian polities and societies have interacted over time through religious, cultural, and economic exchanges as well as diasporic
networks.

The Centre, which is headed by Professor Tansen Sen, is an affiliate project of the program to revive Nalanda University in Bihar, India, a Buddhist university which thrived from the 7th to the 13th centuries. The revived University is a joint undertaking by the regional East Asia Summit (EAS) grouping of countries, and the project will be discussed at their next
Summit.
