Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Tenure-Track or Tenured) - Department of Women's and Gender Studies, Images and Textualities Amherst College, Massachusetts, USA Begins Fall 2010
Images and Textualities suggests a focus on interactive media, such as written or printed texts, pictures (including art) or film; the Global South is defined as Africa, the Middle East, Asia or Latin America. The person hired must have completed her/his PhD, in a humanities discipline, by the time of appointment. A degree from an interdisciplinary program such as Womens Studies, Ethnic Studies, Black Studies, Cultural Studies, Film/Media Studies or the various Area Studies would be acceptable provided the person's main expertise is in the humanities. We would also entertain applications from social scientists with a strong humanities focus, though our already existing strengths in history and political science preclude hiring in those two fields.
We expect to interview our shortlist at the MLA convention in Philadelphia, PA (Dec. 27-30, 2009). Inquiries may be directed to Amy Ford, Academic Coordinator, Womens and Gender Studies Department, wags@amherst.edu.

A Letter from Lontar
Among the short stories penned by Indonesian author Umar Kayam (1932-2002) are several that touch on the subject of Lebaran or Idul Fitri, the holiday that marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan. "Ke Solo, Ke Njati," "Ziarah Lebaran," "Marti" translations of which will be included in a forthcoming Lontar publication of Kayam's work are especially evocative of that time of the year when one and all in Indonesia seem to be involved in preparations for the holidays.
In Kayam's stories, as in real life, characters are cleaning house, saying extra prayers, visiting graves, cooking up a storm, and trying to find a way to get home. As the author writes in "Marti," "Lebaran is for getting together with families; paying respects; saying I'm sorry; catching up with the folks; good food; and going on outings with the nieces and nephews."
Through their language, Indonesian Muslims stress that Idul Fitri marks a time for renewal, a time for letting bygones be bygones, a time for helping those who have helped you in the previous months.
In closing, on behalf of the entire board and staff of Lontar, I would like to say to all recipients of this message, "Mohon maaf lahir dan batin," and to thank everyone who has helped Lontar in the past. Let us hope for an even more prosperous future.
Until next month, I am yours sincerely,
John McGlynn Chairman, Board of Trustees
