Welcome to UH

Dr. Htwe Htwe Win, a visiting scholar from Myanmar funded by ACLS/LUCE, is with the Asian Studies Program during academic year 2009-2010.

Dr Win

She previously worked for the Ministry of Education and the Department of Archaeology in Myanmar. Her current research focuses on the
votive tablets of early Myanmar (5th-13th centuries CE).  These clay tablets were stamped with popular religious motifs and sometimes "signed" by the reigning monarch, which pilgrims purchase at sacred sites to take home as souvenirs.  Aloha, Dr. Win!

The Tung Lin Kok Yuen Conference: Buddhism and Diaspora
University of Toronto, Scarborough
14 - 16 May 2010

This international and interdisciplinary conference will examine the role religion, and specifically Buddhism, plays within diasporic communities.  Communities like Chinese Buddhists, Tibetans, Newars, Sinhalese, and many others have brought with them, translated, or alternately reformulated specific types of Buddhism as crucial pieces in the ongoing negotiation of their cultural and social identities. In this context, the conference inquires whether there have been or are currently specific ways that Buddhism has answered the challenges, problems, and expectations that accompany displacement and relocation.

Trade and Finance in the Malay World: Historical and Cultural Perspectives
University of Frankfurt, Germany
17- 18 June 2010

One of the major impacts of the colonial era in insular Southeast Asia was the (partial) replacement of indigenous trading classes by foreign and migrant merchants. The cultural consequences for the historical construction of "Malay identity" were considerable, influencing discourses in the post-colonial Malay world to the present day. This international seminar aims at discussing both the historical evidence of the replacement process as well as its discursive representation in both historical and contemporary discourses. Contributions from a multitude of disciplinary perspectives are therefore highly welcome.  For more info, contact Prof. Dr. Arndt Graf.

Deadline: 31 October 2009
