Visual Culture & Global Trade
Salem State College, the Salem Maritime Historical Site (National Park Service), and the Salem Athenaeum
Salem, Massachusetts, USA
March 6, 2010

American participation in global trade increased dramatically during the Early Republic.  American ships ventured beyond the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn to expand direct contact with China, India, Indonesia, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and other parts of the Pacific world.  This trade brought widespread access to Asian arts and other visual materials and profoundly influenced American visual arts. Honoraria and travel support for speakers are available through a generous grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art.

SEA Film Series
f-s-3
Now in its fifth year!

We've had another amazing year of films from Southeast Asia! Our mailing list continues to grow and now reaches 320 fans of Southeast Asian film. Since the beginning of the fall 2008 semester, we screened 37 films attended by more than 1,500 people! Thanks to everyone for their support! We'll be bringing back more films from Southeast Asia this summer, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the first screening of the fall 2009 semester. Stay tuned for announcements as that day approaches!
