We are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference at Arizona State University. This year's theme is "Sustainability in Asia."    We are inviting submissions from any area of the humanities or social sciences dealing with the following themes:

  • Health and Well-being
  • Community Building and Civic Engagement
  • Gender Roles and Relations
  • Theoretical & Definitional Issues

2010 North American Graduate Student Conference in Buddhist Studies

University of Toronto
April 9-11, 2010
 
We are soliciting proposals from graduate students in Buddhist Studies (and related fields) for papers that reflect the wide range of disciplines (history, anthropology, art history, linguistics, etc.), methodologies, and geographical regions that characterize the academic study of Buddhist traditions.

Approximately 15 papers will be presented at the conference.  
Presentations (limited to 20 minutes) will be followed by faculty respondents.


FUNDING
Presenters should seek funding from their home institutions to cover travel costs. However, the organizing committee is currently soliciting funds to provide accommodations and meals for the participants. More details to follow.

DEADLINES
Paper proposals of no more than 500 words should be submitted by October 15, 2009. Successful applicants will be notified by December 15 and presenters will be asked to submit their final papers in advance of the conference for review by faculty respondents.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (http://www.actfl.org/), an organization dedicated to the teaching and learning of all languages in the United States since the 1960s, is currently recruiting native speakers of the languages listed below to train as Oral Proficiency Interviewers (to evaluate the level of fluency of another individual in a particular language).  This is contract, temporary work.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (Short-term) for North American and European Researchers

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science
  • Targeted Fields: Humanities. Life Sciences. Physical Sciences. Social Sciences.
  • Open To: Postdoctoral Scholars.
  • Citizenship: Applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of an eligible country.
  • Eligibility Requirements: Hold a doctorate degree when the fellowship goes into effect, which must have been received within ten year prior to April 2 of that year. Applicant must have arranged in advance a research plan with a Japanese host.
  • Stipend: Maintenance allowance of 364,000 Yen a month, plus a settling-in allowance of 200,000 Yen. Award includes a round-trip air ticket and insurance.
  • Deadline: 10/9/2009 - Host institutes have six application deadlines. Applicants should contact them well in advance of the deadline.
  • Program Description: Approximately 60 awards will be granted for scholars to conduct research in Japan for a period of 15 days to 11 months. Program is aimed at providing opportunities to young pre- and post-doctoral researchers from the US, Canada, and Europe to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. (Research may be on Southeast Asia or any other topic.)
