Need and Greed: Buddhist-Christian Social Justice Concerns

Sulak Sivaraksa
, one of Asia's leading social thinkers and activists, will give the Fifth Annual Rev. Yoshiaki Fujitani Interfaith Lecture, at the Mystical Rose Oratory, Chaminade University, on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 4:00 p.m., on the subject "Greed and Need: Buddhist - Christian Social Justice Concerns." David Coleman, Chaminade University Dean of Humanity Division will be the respondent.  The lecture is free and open to the public.  Afterwards, Sulak will sign copies of his just-released book, The Wisdom of Sustainability: Buddhist Economics for the 21st Century.

Following the book signing, there will be a fundraising reception and dinner at the Ching Conference Center, 2nd floor of Eiben Hall, across from the Mystical Rose Oratory.  Reservations by April 15th are required for the reception and dinner. The cost is $50, of which $20 is tax-deductible, and includes a signed copy of Sulak's newest book together with a handicraft made by Thai villagers.  The entertainment at dinner includes Thai and Samoan dance performances.

Theme: Developing Southeast Asia: Challenges and Prospects in the New Millennium

The Department of Southeast Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya is organizing the Third International Conference on Southeast Asia (ICONSEA 2009) from the 8th to 9th of December 2009, at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Academicians, practitioners, researchers, postgraduate students and administrators from the private and public sectors are invited to participate and submit papers to be considered for presentation.

ISEAS - Buddhist Lodge Fellowship

Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore

The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore is accepting applications from scholars who wish to undertake research  and writing in the area of networks of Buddhist exchanges in Asia. Preference will be given to scholars who have completed their Ph.D. degree within the last ten years.  The fellowship will be for a period of up to six months and can be commenced any time between September and December 2009.

Conference Announcement

UK Association for Buddhist Studies Conference 2009

The UK Association for Buddhist Studies is hosting a conference on Friday, July 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. The conference will have featuring lectures by Dr. Vesna Wallance, Numata Professor of Buddhist Studies, University of Oxford; Dr. Peter Harvey, Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Cumbria, Dr. Tse-fu Kuan, Assistant Professor at Yuan Ze University, Taiwan.

There will also be a featuring and discussion session for the film "Caring for Beyong: Two Lao Buddhist Festivals for the Deceased".

East-West Fest: Many Culture,One World
April 18, 2009, East-West Center

The East-West Center Participants Association is hosting its 2009 cultural celebration, East-West Fest. This year's fest is themed Many Cutures, One World and will include cultural booths representing 13 countries.  Performances for the event include award-winning Hawaiian combo Manoa Voices; the winners of the 2008 Tokelau Easter Festival, Te Lumanaki o Tokelau I Amelika; dances of Bhutan, Bali, Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia; music of Cambodia, Vietnam and Bangladesh; and much more.

The local community is cordially invited to join in the East-West Center's celebration of the arts in building cross-cultural understanding. Food, beverages and T-shirts will be sold at the event, though admission is free and open to the public. Parking will be available on the UH Manoa campus.
