Southeast Asian Ethnobotany Symposium

Botany 498 is a high-level, integrated biological science and area-studies course that is relevant to student researchers working in Southeast Asia. These students come from a host of disciplines, including Botany and Asian Studies.

Annual Meeting of the Council on Thai Studies (COTS)
Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, USA
October 23-24, 2009

Theme: Thailand's Responses to Globalization: Globalization v. Traditionalism

The conference explores issues concerning the dynamic interaction between local national processes and globalization processes in terms of Thai responses; highlighting cultural, economic, environmental, socio-political and other responses. While conference is organized around this theme, papers and panels addressing topics outside the main theme are also strongly encouraged. Papers are welcome from all disciplines.

Abstracts should not be longer than 350 words.

International Society for Buddhist Philosophy (ISBP)

Annual Meeting of the American Philosophical Association Eastern Division in New York
December 27-30, 2009

The International Society for Buddhist Philosophy (ISBP) is soliciting paper proposals for its group panels at the Annual Meeting of the American Philosophical Association Eastern Division in New York. Papers discussing Buddhist ethics are especially welcome. Other topics will also be considered as well. The Society is also seeking panel proposals related to any topics in Buddhist philosophy.

Please send title, abstract (200 words), and personal information (name, e-mail address, and institutional affiliation) to Jin Y. Park <jypark@american.edu> and Gereon Kopf <kopfg@luther.edu>. For a panel proposal, include the above information for each speaker.

Khmer Studies Forum
Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Ohio University

All are invited to present their research findings at the Khmer Studies Forum. The Khmer Studies Forum is an informal organization of scholars interested in all aspects of Khmer studies. The Forum intends to facilitate a scholarly discussion regarding research, archival access, and fieldwork challenges and opportunities. Graduate students are especially encouraged to submit abstracts. Membership in the Khmer Studies Forum is free and there is no registration fee for the meeting. Interested individuals should contact: Sok Udom DETH at <oukhmerstudies@gmail.com>.

Abstracts are due by May 1, 2009

The Khmer Studies Forum welcomes individual and group submissions. A maximum of twenty minutes will be allocated per presenter. Individuals wanting to distribute written copies of their papers and/or powerpoint presentations should ensure that a soft copy is sent to Sok Udom DETH at <oukhmerstudies@gmail.com> by May 22, 2009.

Research Award Announcement
2009-2010 UC Irvine Libraries Southeast Asian Archive Visiting Researcher Award

The UC Irvine Libraries is pleased to offer an award of $500 to one individual to use the research collections in the Southeast Asian Archive, part of the UC Irvine Libraries Special Collections and Archives.The award is intended for a researcher who lives outside of Orange County and is not affiliated with UC Irvine. Faculty, students, and independent researchers are encouraged to apply. Research should be conducted between June 2009 and March 2010.

Thai Visiting Scholar Program
Northern Illinois University

The Thai Studies Committee at Northern Illinois University is soliciting applications from Thai scholars who would like to spend a semester at NIU.  Visiting scholars may want to use time off from teaching to write up research or to further their research making use of NIU's Donn V. Hart (Southeast Asia library) collection. Recipients of the award, however, will be asked to participate actively in the NIU community of students and faculty with interests in Thailand, and Southeast Asia more generally, while they are in DeKalb.  This participation may involve making presentations at brown bag lunches, conferences, and/or in classrooms. Applicants may request up to $7,500 to be used toward expenses incurred by June 1, 2010.

The Fulbright Scholar Program offers 69 grants in lecturing,

International Travel Grants for U.S. Middle and High School Teachers to Cambodia


Under the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) the U.S. Department of State and IREX (the International Research & Exchanges Board) announce a competition for middle and high school teachers from the United States to participate in a two-week professional exchange program in many countries including Cambodia.

Eligible applicants must be:
  • Secondary-level (middle or high school), teaching professionals with five or more years of classroom experience in disciplines including English as a Foreign Language, English Language or Literature, and social sciences (including social studies, civics, and history),
  • U.S. citizens, and
  • Able to travel in spring 2010.

The AWFF welcomes film and video works directed, written, shot, edited and produced by Asian women. We are looking for works which question and challenge rules of normalcy regarding gender and ethnicity. The 2009 program will be divided into five sections: New Currents, Asian-Diaspora, Short Films, Experimental and Documentary.

Rian Thai: International Thai Studies

The first volume/issue of "Rian Thai: International Journal of Thai Studies" has recently been released. We can see from this first volume a little taste of the exciting new humanities research being undertaken in Thai Studies (esp. literature, religion, and art history).

Dr. Suchitra Chongstitvatana (Director of the Institute of Thai Studies at Chulalongkorn University is the editor (along with Yoneo Ishii, William Klausner, Pranee Kullavanich, Elizabeth Moore, Peter Skilling, Arthit Thongtak, Supakorn Ditapan, Ritirong Jiwakanon, and Federick Goss).
