The University of Hawai`i at Mānoa School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS) is launching a program, "Asia Pacific in the News," with a presentation titled, "The Impact of the Economic Crisis on Asia and the Pacific," on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at 4:30 p.m. at the Center for Korean Studies.  

The inaugural presentation will feature a panel of six UH Mānoa scholars who will discuss the impact of the economic crisis on Asia and the Pacific.   

The panel members are:
  • PACIFIC: Failautusi (Tusi) Avegallio, Director, Pacific Business Center
  • SOUTHEAST ASIA: Jack Suyderhoud, Professor, Financial Economics and Institutions
  • SOUTH ASIA: Aspy Palia, Professor, Department of Marketing
  • CHINA: Xiaojun Wang, Professor, Department of Economics
  • JAPAN: Theresa Greaney, Professor, Department of Economics
  • KOREA: Sang-Hyop Lee, Professor, Department of Economics

SPAS will sponsor informational presentations periodically throughout the academic year.  The presentations aim to provide timely insights into newsworthy events in Asia and the Pacific. Students, faculty and community members are welcome.  On-campus parking is available for $3.

4th Asian Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies

13-17 July, 2009

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications from postgraduate students who are engaged in research on Southeast Asia to attend the 4th Asian Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies on 13 - 17 July 2009. This 3-day forum will be part of ARI's 5-day Graduate Development Institute and Forum, which in addition to the forum will include two full days of sessions aimed to develop graduate student understandings of academia and relevant skills, through roundtable discussions with faculty, focused practical seminars and breakout group discussions.

International Conference on Shan Studies

The Institute of Asian Studies (IAS), the Institute of Thai Studies, Chulalongkorn University and the Euro-Burma Office are organizing the first international conference on Shan Studies in Bangkok, Thailand. The conference seeks to bring together scholars of Shan Studies from all over the world to share their knowledge and discoveries as well as to meet and promote their co-operation.

Sounds of the Archipelago, Music of the Philippines


Global Icon, LLC, a new record label dedicated to producing compilations centered on traditional folk and other forms of Asian world music, invites submissions for inclusion in the upcoming release of (tentative title): "Sounds of the Archipelago, Music of the Philippines." All forms of traditional/indigenous Philippine (genres: kulintang, Cordillera traditions, rondalla, etc.) and Philippine-world music are especially encouraged. Global Icon LLC encourages all musicians to consider contributing to this historic compilation with national distribution.

Asian Art Scholarships 2009-2010
Society of Asian Art of Hawaii, Inc., Honolulu, HI

The Society of Asian Art of Hawai'i, Inc. promotes the pursuit of higher education by awarding scholarship grants to deserving Hawai'i college or university students studying Asian art.

The Scholarship Program is funded from contributions from individuals and organizations as well as fund-raising activities conducted by the Society. For 2009-2010, approximately $3,000.00 in scholarships is expected to be awarded to two or three students, if there are applicants who meet the scholarship criteria.

Supervisory Instructional Systems Specialist

The Foreign Service Institute (FSI)

The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the U.S. Department of State is recruiting Supervisory Instructional Systems Specialists to work in a number of different languages in several language departments.  You must be a U.S. citizen, have proficiency in a language other than English, and have language teaching experience at the post-secondary level or to adult students. They are particularly interested in speakers of SE Asian languages.

Supervisory Instructional Systems Specialists manage and direct short-term and long-term language training programs designed to give U.S. Government foreign affairs professionals the language and culture skills needed to do their work abroad.  You will recruit, train, develop and supervise Language and Culture Instructors.  You will exercise your professional linguistic skills to develop and monitor language training program(s) to bring students to high levels of language proficiency. You will design new courses and/or make extensive revisions to existing training courses and become certified to administer and score official proficiency tests.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science

Approximately 200 awards will be granted each recruitment period for scholars to conduct research in Japan for a period of 12-24 months. The program is aimed at providing support for cooperative research, under the guidance of Japanese hosts, at lending universities, inter-university research institutes, and science research corporations. Applicants may apply either through a host scientist in Japan or one of the two nominating authority in the United States: National Institutes of Health (NIH) or Social Science Research Council (SSRC).
