The 2009 SPAS Graduate Student Conference is an event open to students from ALL disciplines. Research Fellowship for Study of Buddhist Art
Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore

The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), Singapore is pleased to offer research fellowship grant from June 2009 to May 2010 in the field of Buddhist art and iconography. ACM promotes research on Asian art history, archaeology and material culture, and has earned a reputation in the museum arena for its gallery displays and exhibitions.

The position of Junior Research Fellow is open and we welcome
applications from post-field PhD candidates. The fellowship is for the duration of one year (June 2009-May 2010) and the monthly stipend is S$3,000. Two Opportunities for Graduate Students

June 29 - July 24, 2009

I am pleased to announce a new research training initiative being launched by the Smithsonian Department of Anthropology with support (pending) from the National Science Foundation.

The Summer Institute in Museum Anthropology is an intensive four-week training program that will teach graduate students how to use museum collections in research, incorporating Smithsonian collections as an integral part of their anthropological training. Support from the Cultural Anthropology Program at NSF will cover full tuition and living expenses for 12 students each summer.

We are pleased to announce the publication of our journal, KEMANUSIAAN The Asian Journal of Humanities. The journal was formerly known as Jurnal Ilmu Kemanusiaan (Journal of Humanities) and was re-branded in 2008 to create a focus that we hope appeals to a broader international and multidisciplinary audience.

We also invite contributions of manuscript on a theme related to your own interests and those of the journal.  We seek writings (including book reviews and research notes) from an international community on aspects relating to the broad theme of the Humanities and Asia.

Dr. Lisa Curran's seminar will address research "in progress" on the direct and indirect effects of oil palm agribusiness expansion (edible oils/biofuels) in Indonesian Borneo. She will also discuss the political economy of Indonesia's forestry sector with this agribusiness transition to oil palm plantations from the 1970's to present.

Dr. Curran has spent over 25 years in the South/Southeast Asia conducting scientific research, building local capacity and outreach with policy studies.  Currently, she is a MacArthur Fellow, Santa Fe Institute External Faculty and serves on NASA's Earth Science Advisory Board, as well as governing boards of several Indonesian NGOs she helped form and currently supports.
