Southeast Asian Textiles Exhibition
All about Textiles Museum Learning Center, Gallery 31 Honolulu Academy of Arts Honolulu, Hawaii
Though the word "textiles" comes from the Latin verb texere
meaning to weave or to braid, this exhibition goes far beyond examining
how to make fabric. From aboriginal tracking shoes called kuradaitcha
made of emu feathers, human hair and blood, to Balinese eel traps made
of grass and sticks, we are reminded of the importance of textiles in
enhancing our lives; created to signify culture, spirituality,
identity, survival and most of all expression. Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays through August 9, 2009.

Summer Study Programs in SEA
Summer Travel Study: Thailand Sustainable Ecosystems University of California, Los Angeles Program dates: June 23- July 27, 2009
Participate this summer in a community-based, integrated, social and natural science field research program. You'll engage in sustainability research, intercultural activities, and fieldwork. The academic portion of the program focuses on social and ecological theories, research methods, and analysis along with international policy and practice. And you'll use that knowledge as you join Thai villagers and organizations in community service. You'll learn both with and from the Thai community groups, in particular, those developing sustainable communities, restoring tsunami-damaged ecosystems, regenerating coastal biodiversity, and building resilience to climate change. This is a project-based, learning process-oriented community service course.
Directed by Michael Silverman, UCLA Institute of the Environment, and Rebecca Shipe, UCLA Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Institute of the Environment. The program provides a total of nine (9) upper-division quarter units for two courses, Environment 123 and Environment 131SL. Financial aid is available to qualified UCLA students. All other students should inquire about financial aid at their home institution.

Summer Program in Bali, Indonesia Colorado College
Topics in Ethnomusicology: Arts and Culture of Bali Colorado College Summer Programs June 26-July 17, 2009 1 unit of credit (4 semester hours) Instructors: I Made Lasmawan and Elizabeth Macy
The course explores the arts and culture of Bali, Indonesia, on location in Bali. Music, dance, theater, and visual arts are ubiquitous in Bali, where artistic production is far out of proportion to the size and population of the island. The unique history and culture of Bali are best understood through the arts, which connect past to present, self to community, and religion to reality.
Program Fee (in addition to tuition of $2,545): $2,100 includes lodging, most meals, course-related activities, and transportation in Bali. Does not include airfare. A non-refundable $500 deposit is due upon enrollment for the course.
