Dating Construction and Use of Ifugao Rice Terraces

By  Stephen B. Acabado
Ph.D. Candidate, Anthropology Department
University of Hawaii at Manoa

The origins and age of the Ifugao rice terraces in the Philippine Cordillera continue to provoke interest and imagination in academic and popular debates.  For Southeast Asian scholars, dating these terraces is critical for understanding Philippine prehistory and Southeast Asian patterns more generally. This study presents chronometric dates from well-controlled proveniences in the Banaue district of Ifugao Province.

Stephen Acabado received his BA in Anthropology from the University of the Philippines, Diliman and his MA in Anthropology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  He is currently a PhD Candidate in the Anthropology Department, UH Manoa, completing a dissertation on the archaeology of the Ifugao rice terraces.

March 19-21, 2010
Institute of Buddhist Studies, Berkeley, CA

Keynote Speaker: Thomas A. Tweed

The Institute of Buddhist Studies is pleased to announce the "Buddhism without Borders" conference and seeks papers that offer new, critical, and creative approaches to the study of Buddhism in the West, understood as part of a larger global religious movement.

This conference seeks to explore contemporary and historical developments of Buddhist thought and practice in American Buddhisms, Buddhisms in the West, or Buddhisms outside Asia. How has the Buddhist tradition been shaped by the transnational movement of peoples, diasporas, or immigration? How has the rise of global communication, tourism, and capitalism affected the way Buddhism is understood, taught, and practiced? How do we define "modern" Buddhism? The West? Or even "Buddhism" itself in an increasingly globalized world?

March 26-28, 2009

The study of power in contemporary South-east Asia has never been more timely. Over the last half-century, the region has undergone innumerable far-reaching changes. It has witnessed the rise of postcolonial nation-states, rapid industrialization, economic growth and democratization but also genocide, political upheaval and widespread repression.

Continuity and Change will be a major interdisciplinary and International conference on South-east Asia. Its key aim is to reopen the debate on the issue of 'power'  - both in real life and academic scholarship - as it is manifest across the region.

James Scott (Political Science, Yale)
